Hoping someone can shed some light on this one, on the Tanner side of my family
I ordered a birth certificate which came today to help clear up a couple of queries on mother's side of the family. The certificate came today for:
Mary Ann Snage Batten, born 20 December 1888, Virgin Street,St Ives, Cornwall. Father: Robert George Batten, Fisherman; Mother: Susan Batten, formerly Tanner.
Susan Tanner's parents were Joseph Tanner and Mary Ann, and here they are in the 1861 Census:
109 Virgin Street
Joseph W Tanner,Head,M,28,,Fisherman,St Ives Cornwall,,
Mary Ann Tanner,Wife,M,,27,,Penzance Cornwall,,
Eliza A Tanner,Dau,U,,8,,St Ives Cornwall,,
Grace W Tanner,Dau,,,4,,St Ives Cornwall,,
John W Tanner,Son,,6m,,,St Ives Cornwall,,
Susan Woolcock,Mtrlaw,,,70,Pensioner,St Ives Cornwall,,
Now, this census obviously points to Susan Woolcock, mother in law, as being Mary Ann's mother. However, the marriage of Joseph Tanner and Mary Ann is as follows:
7 Apr 1853 by Banns
Joseph Williams Tanner 20 bachelor Labourer of Back Road, St. Ives (Father: James Tanner, Mariner)
Mary Ann Ineg 20 spinster of ? Street, St. Ives (Father: William Ineg, Confectioner)
Witnesses: Ann Williams [?], Thomas Williams
I then looked up this marriage on St Catherine's index, where I found that "Ineg" was actually "Sneg". This seems to link with the name of Mary Ann "Snage" Batten loosely.
Problem 1 - I can't find any Sneg/Snage families in Penzance or St Ives.
Problem 2 - I can't find a baptism of Mary Ann Sneg in Penzance.
Then this baptism (which may be related or may not be):
05 Jun 1834 Susan daughter of James & Susan Woolcock (née Saul), Miner of St. Ives b.17 May 1834, St. Ives. (The Woolcock name again!)
Has anyone any ideas? I've probably looked at this one too much and can't see the obvious answer.
