;D Oh, go on then Very quickly (as it really is time I did the dreaded cleaning ), I have a Mary Bennatts b. 1781, who married a William Rowe on 18 February 1806 in St Ives, Cornwall. I believe this was her second marriage, the first to a Uren. I am still trying to locate Mr Uren's death though to confirm that this Mary is one and the same. William and Mary had the following children: William Rowe bapt. 3 December 1806 Mary Bennatts Rowe bap. 16 April 1809 Henry Rowe bap. 11 January 1815 Grace Bennatts Rowe bapt. 15 May 1818 Charles Rowe bap. 2 April 1820 I believe that Mary Bennatts was the daughter of Thomas Bennatts and Grace Osborn, and that she was one of 15 children. (Mary and William Rowe's daughter, Grace Bennatts Rowe, married a Boase and called one of her daughters Grace "Osborn" Boase, so this seems to fit nicely.) There is quite a bit on this family on the internet, but I haven't had time yet to do my own corroboration of the info. Does any of this sound familiar? Now it's your turn ;D

I see online that someone has credited Thomas Bennatts as the son of a Philip Bennats of Lelant. The name is familiar, but cannot immediately place him.
The St. Ives Bennats that I have an interest in are not a direct line, but I try to follow some of the generations forward as it helps to put together the earlier lines.
Anyway, Robert Bennatts m. Amy Nance als. Nichols in St. Ives in 1694. She was the widow of Richard Quick.
Robert and Amy had the following children:
James Bennatts, chr 25 Mar 1695 Robert Bennatts, chr. 6 Feb 1697/8 Elizabeth Bennatts, chr. 22 Nov 1701 Frances Bennatts, chr. 22 Apr 1705 John Bennatts, ca. 1708 Richard Bennatts, chr. 4 Jan 1711/12 d. 1732
Amy died in 1723, and her husband predeceased her.
Robert Bennats was a bondsman on the estate of George Bennats of Lelant in 1706. Originally I believed Robert to be a son of George, but after studying the family back several more generations I now think he was the son of Robert and Katherine Bennatts of Lelant, and hence was a cousin of George.
Of Robert's children, I have not traced the sons, so many possibilities open up there. Richard died unmarried. Of the daughters, Elizabeth married her third cousin, George Bennatts, and Frances married a Richard Major.

Thanks for that. Am going to try and follow up on my Rowe and Bennatts side, so will let you know how I get on. My Mary Rowe (nee Bennatt) outlived her husband and at least two of her sons.. one was crushed by a ship on the way to work, the other died in Africa of yellow fever. One daughter, Mary Bennatts Rowe, disappears after her birth in 1809; another daughter, Grace Bennatts Rowe, married Joseph Henry Treglohan Boase in 1840 and moved to Wales where she died in 1894. Henry, another son, died in 1857. I seem to have gone sideways on a lot of my lines at the moment, so it's probably time I started going backwards again. Will keep you updated on what I find.

I was nosing around today, trying to figure out where your Philip Bennatts comes in. He was married at Lelant, to Christian Safeguard of St. Ives, and all he children are baptised at St. Ives. I cannot seem to find a place to fit him into any of the Lelant families, and he does not appear in any of the Bennatt wills that I have abstracted.
There are three wills for Bennatts at St. Jsut that I need to get my hands on. Will try to do that this Saturday.
The Lelant Bennatts originated in Gulval, and so did at least one of the St. Just ones....

Just thought I'd check whether you'd found any clue as to where my Bennatts fitted in as yet. Not having any luck getting back any further at my end .

I agree with Zenobia -- I ordered the (probably the same) wills in years ago and could not find Philip B in the families covered in the wills. It seems therefore like there was at least two separate Bennatts families in St Ives in the 1700s. Philip B and Thomas are my line. Thomas B left a lengthy will which I do not have to hand. I would not be surprised if the Rowes are relatives as Cornishmaid suggests.

Hi there, I would be very interested to know what you come up with. It would appear we may be related if this is the same Bennatts family

I must confess to being not absolutely certain of how I arrived at the following and I must say that I still have a lot of data to process that is still in written form. However From what I worked out in 2004 your Philip Bennatts (m. Christian Safeguard) is most likely:- bp. 2nd July 1687 ST ERTH s/o John BENNETTS, 'als Kerroe'

I will dig into my notes and see what said reason was...

Ooops! I began looking at it again, and I believe I based my reason (I have a big "NO!" written next to the connection) on two things - 1: that Phillips would have been quite old at the marriage, and older still at the birth of the last child and 2: that a Hannibal Bennatts who died in Lelant, had a number of children in the 1670s and 1680s in Ludgvan, including a Phillip and a George (Phillip and Christian used the names Hannibal and George for their children), and I was thinking that Phillip might be an unrecorded son of this George or Phillip. However! That fell apart when I realized upon double checking that Hannibal's Phillip was actually a daughter I did look at George and he does not appear to have had a son Philip or any significant gaps in his children. So that made me take a second look at the son of John Bennats als. Kerrow. In my notes I have Christian's husband as 'of St. Ives' but do not know where I got that. In 1731 there is a burial of a Margaret, wife of Philip Bennnats, so now it is entirely possible we are indeed looking at an older man. Unfortunately, the St. Ives online burials does not give the exact dates of death, only the year. But it is looking much more hopeful for this identification now. I will keep looking into it.

BTW....
Philip Bennats and Christian Safeguard were married on 28 Aug 1731 in Lelant.
They had the following children, all chr. at St. Ives.
Jane Safeguard 30 Mar 1731 (illegitimate to Christian) Philip Bennats 2 May 1733 James Bennatts 1 Jan 1737 John Bennatts 1 Jan 1739 Thomas Bennatts 29 Aug 1742 Hanniball Bennatts 23 Mar 1746 George Bennatts 2 May 1749
Philip would thus have been married at 44 and had his last child at 62.

I have also considering this possibility: not impossible if it was a second marriage on his part, and to a much younger wife. Could not find a will for this Phillip. I may have the date of Margaret's burial in my files.
