Thanks for the emailed certificate. I had seen that reference before in these pages. It could of course be one and the same Olga. Just odd that nothing further was mentiontioned of her by my aunt. It would be fascinating to find out.

Dear Chris, I hope you don't mind as this is my branch, and I find two Olgas born about 1880. One is the daughter of Vladimir Tewhella and Amalia (I think their Olga had daughters Lely and Nadia) the other of Nicholas and Sarah Jane Hughes. They were very similar in age, and I have lost many records due to computer crashes. I hope this helps in some way and am sorry if only contributes confusion.
I am just putting it out there for what it might be worth.

OLGA BOUCHIER.
I have seen from a genealogy site "GENI" of which I can only see bits, that Olga Bouchier, witness to the marriage of Anatole Trewheller and Blanche Haworth, was in fact the daughter of Blanche and William Newton, or possibly William Haworth, her two previous husbands, which of course would make sense. I have no proof of this and can find no record of a marriage between Olga Newton or Haworth. and a Bouchier. However, if this is correct then it means of course Olga Bouchier is not the missing daughter of Nicholas Trewheller and Sarah Jane Hughes.
This, as they say, is doing my head in.
CT. I don't know whether you would prefer me to post my findings here or to email you, or perhaps both???
Chris.

Hi Chris - I think it is good to have you post your information here as we have others who are interested. Certainly keep in touch via email especially for anything that is best offline.
I will try to look into the possible connection between Olga and Blanche Haworth as well.

Hi all - ChrisH may be correct about Olga Bouchier and her origins as presented in his last post. In am not 100% satisfied as yet and still require further information to be found but after checking my database and a few other items I have it appears definitely possible that Olga was indeed the daughter of Anatole Trewheler's wife Blanche Haworth formerly Newton nee Dodd. Blanche Emily Dodd was born at Ashton Under Lyne, Greater Manchester 16th February 1877 and baptised at the Cathedral Church of St Marie in Sheffield, Yorkshire on 6th July 1879 - daughter of Edward Peers Dodd and Alice Gent. She married William NEWTON in the December Qtr of 1893 in the Sheffield Registration District. There were two known children from this marriage - 1. OLGA - birth registered December Qtr 1894 in the Chortlton Registration District of Greater Manchester and 2. MURIEL who was possibly born in Southern Rhodesia. I have not yet found a death record for Henry Newton but Blanche was still known as Newton when she departed England in January 1910 with two children age 9 and 5 bound for Cape Town. The elder of these two may have been Muriel but the younger I am not sure of - perhaps a child who did not survive. It must have been soon after her arrival back in Southern Rhodesia that Blanche married William Louis Titley HAWORTH who had been previously married to Margaret Geary. From his first marriage William Haworth had a son - Thomas Richard Glenville Haworth - who was born in 1906. He died in Lancashire in 1992. From his marriage to Blanche Emily Newton nee Dodd there was one daughter - Eugenie Mercia Haworth. She married Ronald Arthur Courtenay Vere BURNETT at Francistown, Botswana in 1933. William and Blanche Haworth were divorced sometime before 1930 and William died 7th July 1940 at Salisbury, Rhodesia as the result of injuries caused in a car accident. (As a matter of interest William Louis Titley Haworth was born at Blackpool, Lancashire in 1882 to parents John Albert Titley Haworth and Eugenie (nee Landucci).) Returning to Olga Newton - on the 2nd of April 1928 Arthur BOUCHIER age 34 with wife Olga age 30 and daughter Audrey arrived at Southampton from Southern Rhodesia. (The image is very hard to read and Olga's age is based on transcribed information only. Arthur's age is clear enough and Audrey was aged between 1 and 14) On the 12th of June 1933 Arthur J Bouchier age 39, Olga Bouchier age 35 and Audrey Bouchier age 6 arrived at Natal aboard the Windsor Castle having sailed from Southampton. Their stated 'Country of last Permanent Residence' was given as England and the Country of Intended Future Permanent Residence was also given as England. Now, I did not find any other references to this family entering or leaving England in the intervening years so it does indicate the family was in the Country at the time Anatole Trewheler and Blanche Haworth were married. In addition to that I have a record showing that Blanche Haworth arrived at Southampton from Durban on the 18th of August 1930 just a couple of months before the marriage. The one thing that concerns me is the age of Olga in those shipping records - she was born in 1894 yet both passenger lists indicate a birth about 1898. The fact that the passenger lists are consistent makes me uneasy. There is no record of the 1894 Olga having died early (at least not in England) but it is possible she did die young and another child was named for her. It is also possible that Olga simply nominated her age incorrectly ..... and consistently so! Nevertheless, these do appear to be the witnesses at Anatole Trewheler's wedding. BTW - I thought I had found absolute (or near enough) proof that the problem was solved as there was an Yvonne C Newton born at West Ham in London in 1930 with the mother's maiden name recorded as 'Newton'. In fact I also found a Rosemary K Newton in 1934 at Kensington and Shirley K Newton in 1837 at West Ham ................ but then I rechecked marriages and found that a Hubert J Bouchier had married Ivy A Newton at Camberwell in 1829! I have also checked the 1939 England and Wales Register but have not been able to find the Bouchier family even though they stated in 1933 that they would be permanently residing in England. And there is no record of their deaths in the Death Index. The one thing that would be helpful would be for more records to be made available from Zimbabwe! But one last thing before I finish this note - I just found something else I had almost forgotten about! There are 2 sources available for Zimbabwe of which one is the Death Registers from 1890-1977 where I found the record for Blanche Emily Trewheler. Item 10 on this form is 'Names in full of children of deceased and state whether majors or minors. State separately the children born of different marriages and give the date of birth for each minor.' The answer to that question is as follows:- OLGA BOUCHIER (born Newton) Murial Holdcroft (born Newton) Eugenie Mercia Bristra (born Haworth) That should now put to rest beyond any doubt the question of who was the witness at Anatole and Blanche Trewheler's marriage! SARAH JANE HUGHES.
How did she come to go to Russia?
The following from the notes of Maybel Hughes, daughter of Henry Huggett Hughes and Frances Packham.
The brackets are mine.
“………...My father had a younger sister Sarah Jane, always known as Jenny, who at the age of 18 (I think she may have been a little older) went to Russia as governess to the children of a Russian Officer’s wife. This Russian family had been billeted on the Hughes family after The Crimean War. (during the Crimean War – see below) Here the nephew of the lady met Jenny and fell in love with and proposed to her. She, feeling that she was not going to be an acceptable daughter-in-law to Nicholas Trewheler’s rather grand and alarming mother, refused him and came back to England. In a month or two a letter arrived from Madam Trewheler urging her to go back and marry her disconsolate son- who was miserable without her. So back Jenny went and the young couple were married and were extremely happy together…………..”
I could not understand this reference to the Crimean War until I came across the Battle of Bomarsund which is well described on Wikipedia, of which this is an extract…..
“What became known as the Crimean War was declared in March 1854. In June, concerned at the possible threat posed to Britain by the Russian Baltic Fleet, the Royal Navy attacked the fortress of Bomarsund, in the Åland Islands off the coast of Finland. That attack was repulsed, but a further attack by British and French forces in August proved successful. The fortress was destroyed and prisoners taken to Britain and France.[2] Some 340 members of the Fusilier Grenadiers were taken to Lewes, in Sussex. The officers were Russian, but the men were mostly Finns[3] – Finland was part of the Russian Empire at the time and many of the defenders of Bomarsund had been Finnish conscripts.
The officers, having given their parole, were housed with local families and integrated themselves into local society. After "several of the leading gentlemen of the county [had] been introduced to the officers, and others left their cards", the officers went riding, appearing "delighted with the salubrity of the air",[3] were invited to shoot on a local estate, succeeding in "bagging a large quantity of game", and attended a charity concert in Brighton.[4] Such freedom of movement left them "frequently subjected to annoyance, insult, and even personal violence from the low characters who loiter in the streets", though the local magistrates dealt severely with such offences.”[
So one of these Russian officers must have been billeted with Sarah Jane’s parents Henry and Sussannah. I wonder who he was?

I have been thinking about this for a long while. Sarah Jane's mother-in-law was from quite a wealthy Russian family. I know of some siblings, but their children were about the same age, so the governess designation does not quite work, While there were military connections, I can't get there. I need to do more work on Catherine Albrecht. Thank you so much for sharing the information you have.

Certainly more info on Katherine Albrecht would be very interesting. My aunt's memory may well have been a little hazy when she wrote the above, but I think the "governess" bit is still a possibility. Also I suspect the "Russian officer billeted with Hughes's" to be correct. It is safe to presume also that the Hughes and the Russians could have kept up a correspondence after the latter's return to Russia. Chris.

My thinking is that Sarah Jane's husband's aunt might have been a great aunt. I do not know. One message seems to be lost. I am checking out her husband's uncles. The aunts did seem to have married into the Russian military. Z bashny.net/t/en/326614
