OK All - I think I have just about, almost, nearly found a way through the Andrew EDDY maze to identify the family of Catherine Thomas EADEY.
But what a drama!!
Although not complete yet I find that I have to believe that the mystery girl was most likely the Catherine EDDY baptised at Zennor in 1820.
But as I have previously pointed out there were a number of Andrew EDDYs and they all had wives named either Margaret or Jane.
We know that Hannah Thomas EDDY d/o Andrew and Margaret was baptised at Zennor in 1826 and the contention was that Catherine would be a sister.
I must say that I do not believe they were sisters!
But I do now believe it very possible they were half-sisters!
But first the problem of Andrew and Margaret given that both relevant marriages occurred after Catherine was born.
Andrew EDDY married Margaret MARTINS 11th February 1826 at Towednack
Andrew EDDY married Margaret Champen VEALE 30th April 1825 at Zennor
At Towednack we have children Andrew, William, MARGARET VEAL, John, JANE THOMAS, Thomas and Ann.
At Zennor we have children HANNAH THOMAS, Nanny, Richard and Matthew.
Each family used the name 'Thomas' amongst their children at least once.
BUT oddly enough the family at Zennor did not include a son named Andrew!
Paying attention?
Items of note:-
1. Margaret EDDY of Zennor is deceased prior to the 1841 Census
2. Andrew EDDY of Towednack is deceased prior to the 1841 Census
3. IGI (good old IGI) shows an entry for Margaret Champen VEALE which shows birth of 1795 and Death at Tregarthen, Zennor 2nd April 1840
4. In 1851 Margaret at Towednack states she was 48 and born at Towednack.
5. Andrew of Zennor but now at St Just in 1851 says he was born at Zennor and is now 67
6. Andrew of Towednack was age '40' at the 1841 Census.
Deductions etc.
Good Old IGI - well they have got it WRONG again!!!
Margaret Champion VEALE was baptised at Lelant 20th March 1803 with previous children giving no scope for this to be a late baptism.
Therefore the entry from IGI cannot possibly be correct!
The name 'Margaret Veal EDDY' was used at Towednack which is most odd if that particular Margaret was Margaret MARTINS!
Each family used the name 'Thomas' amongst their children which, on the fact of it, might suggest some inter-Parochial meanderings.
But all becomes much more clear when investigating the possible parents for each Andrew EDDY.
The Andrew EDDY at Towednack was age about 40 in 1841 so is unlikely to be born before 1796.
The only Andrew EDDY I have in my database or can find in IGI that is a likely match:-
Andrew s/o Andrew and Jane (nee THOMAS) EDDY bp. 1st March 1801 at Zennor
This explains daughter Jane Thomas EDDY.
Margaret (Peggy) EDDY was still living at Nancledra in 1881 and this time gave her age as 77 and birthplace as Lelant.
With Margaret Veal EDDY being baptised at Towednack this combines to indicate that it was Margaret Champen EDDY (nee VEALE) at Towednack.
It also means that the Margaret at Zennor was Margaret MARTINS.
This family used the name Richard which, whilst also used a little amongst the EDDY family maybe more suggestive of the MARTINS.
The burial entry for Margaret at Zennor (via OPC) suggests she was 45 when she died in 1840.
There appear to be only two possible candidates for the wife of Andrew EDDY:-
bp. 28th April 1793 Towednack d/o Richard and Ann
bp. 26th October 1794 Towednack d/o James and Margaret
The use of the name Richard would suggest the first of the above yet with the burial taking place in April 1840 Margaret whould actually have been 47.
In the case of her being the daughter of James she would have been 45 years and 6 months.
In this case there is no sibling named Richard (and nor in Andrew's family) BUT her grandfather would have been RICHARD MARTINS who married Grace UREN.
Hopefully David might be able to clarify this but for the moment I am going to include Margaret as the daughter of James and Margaret.
This is also reflected in IGI ( ) but for once I am inclined to agree with them.
BTW - the Andrew at Zennor who married Margaret MARTINS was baptised at Zennor 31st December 1781 son of Andrew and Joanna (nee THOMAS).
I hope I have not confused matters too much here but at least you can share what I have gone through to try and sort this little problem out! ;D
A little more work to do and then I will post another note giving my opinions on the exact parentage of Catherine Thomas EADEY.
