And in fact it was a 35 year old female who died of Marasmus at the Union Workhouse in Tavistock, and she was the wife of a miner by the name of Charles Glasson.

Excellent! Pleased to hear the 'little grey cells' were doing their job. And it seems you now have that link to Devon confirmed so you need to find what happened to old Charles? CT

CT There is a death in Tavistock for Anna Maria in 1848. Looking at a leap of faith here!! When I found the death entry for Anna Maria in 1848 in the Tavistock area I also found a birth for Emma Dorothy Jane Glasson in the same area. So I took and gamble and bought it. At first I thought it was probably a waste of time as it showed that Emma was the daughter of James Glasson and Lavinia Matthews. Eventually I found Lavinia at home with her father in Devon in the 1851 census. Emma had a 2 year old brother and he was born in America - here we go again I thought. Then I found a marriage for James and Lavinia in 1848 in Conneticut, USA and in the same record was a marriage for a Jane Glasson. Charles and Anna Maria had children James and Jane and neither can be found in the 1851 census. I get the sneaking suspicion that the remnants of the Charles and Anna Maria Glasson family have emigrated. Lannanta

Lannanta - if you can supply me with all the information you have regarding the Connecticut marriages or other US stuff relating to this family I will see if I can expand on it.
I have some Connecticut resources and I may be able to track them down further.

Just using Ancestry and the resource was the "Conneticut Town Marriage Records, pre 1870". James marriage 1848 and Jane's 1850 to David POPE.

Lannanta - my email explained that Jane Glasson could not be the daughter of Charles and Anna Maria and thus adds doubt about whether the James who married Lavinia was the son of Charles.
For everyone else - I checked the US Census for the family of David and Jane Pope whose marriage occurred just a few months before the 1850 US Census.
In 1850 Jane's age was recorded as 21 and David Pope 27. This was 'close' but the daughter of Charles and Anna Maria was baptised in 1832 so there must be some doubt.
However from 1860 onwards David and Jane are both 10 years older. i.e. Jane was 41 in 1860 when I would have expected her to be 30.
In 1900 she stated she was born in May 1820 and in 1910 when she was aged 90 she stated she arrived in the US in 1832.
I suspect James and Jane might well have been siblings given they both married at Bristol, Connecticut only 2 years apart and there were not a lot of Glassons about.
My next query regarding James is about the name of his daughter - Emma Dorothy Jane Glasson.
It would be worth checking the family of Lavinia Matthews but these names don't strike me as offering a defined link to Charles and Anna Maria Glasson.

CT It was always going to be a leap of faith and it did really come to light far too easy... back to the drawing board Thanks for the detective work, much appreciated as always. Lannanta

And now you have MORE mysteries to solve! There are a number of other Glassons appearing in the earlier US Census who had been born in England. Let me know if and when you would like more detail and I will get copies of the images for your perusal. You never know - one or two of them might just help solve a couple of other mysteries for you. CT Well well 3rd May 1842 at Camborne:Anna Maria Glasson said that I about 28 years of age and am the wife of Charles Glasson, late of Camborne, labourer, who ran away from and deserted me about six months ago leaving me and my four children, that is to say Sarah aged twelve years, Jane aged 10 years, Charles aged 8 years and William aged two years, chargeable to the Parish of Camborne - We are now chargeable to that Parish. In the month of June 1830 I became chargeable to Camborne and was removed by an order of two Justices of the Peace for Cornwall from Camborne to the parish of Ladock in the same County. The order was executed and I was removed with my two elder children from Camborne to Ladock and there was no appeal against the order. I afterward returned to Camborne and whilst there I was relieved there by the overseers of the poor of the said Parish of Ladock. They continued to supply me with such relief from time to time until within the last two years. I had a child called William who died about two years ago in Camborne and who was buried there at the expense of the Parish of Ladock. The mark of Anna Maria Glasson. I get the sneaking suspicion that Charles is not about to be found by me over 150 years later?? The examination of Anna's mother in law provides the reason why Ladock came into the picture so I shall provide that later. Lannanta

'Well, well' indeed! Eldest son James is not mentioned here which raises yet another question! - Was he dead or did he do a runner also? He appeared in the 1841 Census so if he had died sometime in the few months between the Census and the date of Examination then there would be some mention of him. At about 14 he would have been probably fending for himself but I do find this a little unusual. Was Anna Maria having a little trouble counting or was there another child we did not previously know of? By my records there was a son William baptised December 1836 and buried January 1837 .................. but that is FIVE years previously. And then there is the William who appeared in the 1841 Census age 2. But you are right - if Anna and the Overseers could not find Charles in 1842 then the chances of us finding him now do seem a little slim. But that does not meant that we won't succeed where they failed! I am looking forward to the next part of this little chapter. CT

Just an aside, really.... The children @ Gas Street Camborne in 1841 with Charles & Anna Maria Glasson: Anna Maria was a pretty young mother to Sarah age 12 in 1842 (Anna Maria 28 at 1842 examination; 35 at 1848 death). But perhaps TOO young to be mother to James age 14 in 1841...legally? A mother at 13/14 years old? Was Charles his father? Perhaps relevant to why she said she had 4 children, not 5.... Sue

Very good point Sue! I completely missed that little gem. But I agree - her age in 1842 gives her a birth year around 1813. No, this does not work. She has to be telling a minor untruth here or else there is an error by the scribe. The baptism of James Glasson 23rd June 1823 records his parents as Charles and ANN MARIA. Maybe her age should read 38 instead of 28 but to find out for sure we may need to find a baptism. Looking at the 1841 Census and it appears she may have been born in Wales. At least there is a big 'W' entered in the column at right for notes about Scots, Irish or Foreign descent. CT

Yes, I see the OPC baptism for James 1827 now. And Q Sessions 1830 has
Strange that Anna Maria's age is fairly consistent though: 25 in 1841 census; 28 at 1842 examination; 35 at 1848 death.
Are the answers in the mysterious Welsh valleys?
Where was the marriage?

This is very strange and again I had not picked up on the consistency in her age. The marriage took place at Camborne 4th March 1827 and I just noticed that on of the witnesses was one Wm Clarke who I would have to guess would be father or brother. The other Witness was David Duckham who I think was Parish Clerk around that time. He certainly witnessed a few marriages. And there is another strange thing:- As quoted by yourself this is from the QS of 1830. What is interesting is that Anna is named as 'wife of Charles Glasson' yet it is only she and the children who are being 'removed'. So what was Charles up to around this time that only his wife and kids are being dragged all over the shop? He obviously returned as there were three more children but then he did the runner for good. Seems to have been a luvvly fella! CT
