The Bottrel(l) family are an ancient family. I believe you may find them mentioned in the Herald's Visitations of Cornwall. One of the Bottrell's, i.e. William Bottrell or "Old Celt" was a great antiquarian and writer on all matters Cornish and was also an expert on folklore and parochial history. There is a connection with the Vingoe family and my hence also my family through his grandmother who was a Vingoe. "Old Celt" was the son of William Vingoe Bottrel and Elizabeth Howe, later William snr married Margaret Bosence. Moving on to the Grandparents, Richard Vingoe married Mary Bottrell in 1788. However this line of the Bottrell family all seem to be from in and around Sennen so I don't know if there is a connection with Michaelstow. Moving on to your line. Theophilous Bottrell was bapt in St Clether 31 Oct 1830 s/of Richard and Mary. I can't find anything for a Richard and Mary other than one marriage in 1826 between Richard Bottrell and Mary Hosking, 30 Dec 1826 Sennen. I have a Richard Bottrell bapt 31 Jul 1802 at Sennen. There is another entry for a Richard who marries a Mary, baptised at St Juliot 1804 and marries a Mary from Illogan 1853- it's not sourced and seems like a private LDS entry, so for now I am going to discount it- but not forget it! I also have a Richard baptised 1807 at Jacobstow, 4 March 1807 to Theophilous and Martha. I think this is your man. PROBLEM. The only marriage record I can find is in 1805 at Jacobstow, between a Theophilous Bottell and REBECCA BURDON! This might explain one of the later names in your family, but it doesn't explain who the Martha was on the baptism record unless there has been a transcription error- always possible. Back to another thing, as far as Jacobstow is concerned there are only two Bottrells baptised there that I can find in the records: 1. RICHARD BOTHERELL - 20 JUL 1633 Jacobstow, Cornwall 2. RICHD BOTRIL - 04 MAR 1807 Jacobstow, Cornwall Then there are only two marriages at Jacobstow for Bottrells. 1. JOHN BOTTERIL : 25 MAR 1822 Jacobstow, Cornwall marries MARY CORNISH- we may be related here!!! on a different line!!! Small world eh? 2. THEOPHILOUS BOTTERELL -: 26 FEB 1805 Jacobstow, Cornwall, married REBBECCA BURDON My belief is that these Jacobstow Bottrells may well have come from the West Penwish area, as if you do an open search on the surname, although they turn up throughout Cornwall, the vast majority come from Sennen and/or West Penwith area. The Jabobstow side has only the ones mentioned. Other interesting possibilities. John Botterel marries Charity Coumbe at St Clether, 11 Nov 1795. In the later part of the 19th century all the parish records show the family, I believe to be yours at Marazion, which would tie in the the information you have provided. 19-Jan 1851 Marazion Mary Anne BOTTERELL 16-Jan 1853 Marazion Elizabeth Jane BOTTEREL 21-Sep 1855 Marazion Eliza BOTTEREL 24-Apr 1859 Marazion Theophilus BOTTRELL 20-Apr 1862 Marazion Kate BOTTERELL 24-Apr 1864 Marazion Joanna BOTTEREL 23-Sep 1866 Marazion Betsie BOTTRELL 11-Mar 1869 Marazion Sarah Gertrude BOTTRELL 21-Jan 1869 Marazion Peters Louie BOTTRELL 14-Jan 1872 Marazion Samuel Richard BOTTRELL 14-Jan 1872 Marazion Beatrice Annie BOTTRELL As for ELIJAH, I presume you meant 1837 and not 1937? Birth: 21 MAR 1837 Christening: 02 MAY 1837 Bible Christian, Michaelstow Circuit to Richard Bottrel and Mary Mutton. This Richard may well be the Richard baptised at Jacobstow to Theophilous and Martha. Right, I can't find anything much more. I am sure others will! Without knowing the ins and outs of the family it becomes difficult to discern what is feasible and what is not. Hope this helps. We need to find a baptism for Theophilous the elder! Anyway, perhaps some questioned answered but some other ones raised. Hope this helps,

Welcome to Penwith Genealogy and we will see what we can do to help. I presume from your note that you wish obviously to get back a little further than Theophilus Bottrell and also to find a little more about the siblings who appear to have remained in Cornwall. I will try and put a few things together and post the results in a following note. CT

Malcolm and I must have posted our initial replies almost simultaneously! Will look again at Malcolm's input shortly. But first - I have only just started looking at this family and already there are conflicting records! Rebecca Mutton BOTTREL was baptised at Tresparrett Chapel, St Juliot 12th April 1835 (born 22nd March) Elijah BOTTERAL was baptised at Tresparrett Chapel, St Juliot 2nd May 1837 (born 21st March) Both events were on the Michaelstow Bible Christian Circuit. In the notes for Rebecca it states that her mother was the daughter of Richard and ELIZABETH MUTTON. In the notes for Elija it states that his mother was the daughter of Richard and ANN MUTTON. What a great start to proceedings! The next item I have found is the 1851 Census record for what appears to be the correct family. 1851 - Illogan Nancekuke Richard BOTTRALL, head, mar, 45, farm labourer, Cornwall Worpstow (Warbstow) Mary do., wife, mar, 43, Cornwall Davidstow Rebecca do., daur., unm, 17, at home, St Juliot Elijah do., son, unm, 15, cart driver, Illogan Mary do., daur, 12, Illogan Richard do., son, 8, Illogan Ruben do., son, 6, Illogan William do., son, 4, Illogan This family is indexed in Ancestry as BOTHBALL! No sign of Theophilus here but that does not mean a lot just yet. More to follow. CT

IN 1841 the family was already at Illogan so they would appear to have gone there soon after Elijah was born.
1841 Illogan Portreath
Richard BOTTRELL, 30, ag. lab., In County Mary do., 25, In County Theophuleas do., 11, In County Rebecca do., 6, In County Elijah do., 4, In County Mary do., 2, In County
I cannot find baptisms for any of the children at Illogan which probably means they were baptised Non-Conformist and at some chapel for which I do not currently have records.
Will do some more digging and see what turns up.

I had a nice long note all prepared and as I hit the 'send' button my connection dropped out and I lost the whole darned lot!!! To summariaze what I had. No luck finding a baptism for Theophilus. Like Malcolm the only marriage I can find is the 1805 event at Jacobstow. The only Richard Bottrell I can find with a father named Theophilus was in 1807 at Jacobstow with the mother recorded as Martha. As the 1805 marriage was to Rebecca Burdon I suspect at this point that Martha was in error in the register - something we have seen on numerous occasions. I have also searched for a death for Theophilus but been unable to find one so far. Also no luck with the marriage of Richard Bottrell and Mary Mutton. But I think I can identify Mary for you. Mary d/o Richard and Elizabeth Mutton baptised 11th May 1810 at Davidstow. In the Census her age reflects a birth about 1807 or 1808 so she may well have been baptised a little late. I believe her parents to be:- Richard Mutton, bachelor of Davidstow married Elizabeth Wise, spinster of Davidstow 5th October 1807 at Davidstow Witnesses:- Gerrance Hayne, John Hayne The younger Theophilus (brother to Elijah) was buried at Marazion 28th October 1899 age 70. I have about exhausted my available resources but there are others here who have access to a little more. Hopefully they might be able to find something. CT

I shall "muddy the waters": Richard Bottrell may have had a second wife:Mary Hosking, 1806 or 1804. Madron, died 1866 Sennen (as recorded on Death Cert.). 1861 Census: she is recorded as wife of Richard but I was led to that entry via Hosking. Two others in the household are: Jane Mathews, daughter, 1833 Sennen. and Rosena 1845 Sennen. See also 1851 Census. ie my searches seem to lead me to the same family. I was looking at the Hosking family and only "bumped into" the other persons. There is a Mary Mutton died 13 May 1886, Ontario. Family incl. Rosina, Mary Ann and a Theophilius 1829......I have not checked the sources. David

David... I had wondered that too, in which case it would bring the Botterells back to Sennen where they belong instead of gallavanting around Jacobstow, Warbstow, Michaelstow and Davidstow!! Just out of interest there is a Mutton Cove in Plymouth where I used to go fishing many years ago. Whilst doing this bit of research I did get the feeling that something is "missing" here, perhaps a second marriage ought not be ruled out.

Malcolm: Methinks Mary Mutton is the second wife. Mary H. died in 1866,Sennen. Richard B.1802 died 1872, Penzance, so, possibly, Mary M. took off, with some of the family, to Canada.
Mary M., 1851 Census. The Vingoe family is next door with a "visitor", Ann Towkella, or Towhella.
On another Census: Grace Vingoe Bottrell 1844-1932.
David.

Before going any further I need to thank David for pointing out Ann TOWKELLA who is, in fact, Ann TREWHELLA. She is one that slipped through my net when I was downloading all the Census images for Trewhella. BUT NOW - you have indeed well and truly 'muddied the waters'! I'm not sure where to begin to try and 'unmuddy' things but let's start with Mary MUTTON in Canada. The mention of a Theophilus born 1829 certainly fits into the family under enquiry however it is not clear although seems likely that his surname was also MUTTON. But if Mary MUTTON died in Canada in 1886 then I fail to see just how she fits into the conversation. After all Mary MUTTON married Richard BOTTRELL so if she were still alive up until 1886 I should think the name you would find her under would be BOTTRELL. You mention that Mary HOSKING is probably the second marriage for Richard BOTTRELL. First let me point out that we are now talking about families at either end of Cornwall even though our Jacobstow couple moved to Illogan by 1841. Richard BOTTERELL married Mary HOSKING 30th December 1826 at SennenIn the 1851 Census at Sennen Richard and Mary had four children with them - James 21, Mary Ann 13, Charles 8 and Rosina 6 - all born Sennen. This means that they were actually in Sennen in 1829/30, 1837/38 and later. Our couple from Jacobstow appear to have married sometime about 1828 or 1829. In 1830 they baptised son Theophilus at St Clether. In 1835 they baptised Rebecca at St Juliot. In 1837 they baptised son Elijah at St Juliot. Here is the list of children at Sennen - just for the record:- Richard bp. 10th June 1827 James bp. 15th August 1830 Jane bp. 15th December 1833 John bp. 27th June 1835 Mary Ann bp. 18th March 1838 Charles bp. 25th September 1842 Richard Bottrell at Sennen was a Carpenter. Richard Bottrell of Jacobstow/Illogan was a Labourer. Folks - we have two completely different and separate Richard Bottrells involved here with two completely different wives! Furthermore - in this note I have mentioned the family at Sennen with four children still living at home. In one of my earlier notes I showed the family of Richard and Mary at Illogan with their brood. I suggest we get these two conversations separated and deal with each family on an individual basis. There is no connection between the two even though it may be that our man from Jacobstow has ancestry further West. But I think that connection is going to be at least a couple of generations back if it is there at all. Now let's concentrate on trying to find out a little more about Theophilus Bottrell so that we might find some joy for our new member 'etdog1976'. CT

Good points CT, it is a bit confusing.
Note there is also a John Botterel who marries in c1822 to Mary Cornish at Jacobstow. Hypothetically speaking, we may have family here. My suspicion is down to the lack of the family in the Jacobostow area and also that at a later stage Theophilous and co are said to move back to the West, i.e. Penwith and we find those Marazion baptisms to a Theophilous Botterell listed above.
It is, however, as you say rather muddy!
As for Mary Mutton. I don't think our "Canadian" Mary would be the right age, person etc Mutton is not too uncommon a surname either.
Let's get a hypothetical tree up and move on from there.... back later, M

Malcolm - the marriage to Mary Cornish may be worth pursuing to at least clarify some points at this stage. But we have the use of the name Mutton as a second christian name and the move of the family just before 1841 across to Illogan. From there it is not such a jump down to Penzance or Marazion. I think it best to keep this is uncomplicated as possible given it is Theophilus who is the main point of the excercise at the moment. It is curious that the name appears only a couple of times so we could in fact be looking at another illegitimate birth with the Bottrell name being taken on later. CT

MUTTON FAMILY
I have found the following baptisms at Davidstow.
07-Feb 1808 Davidstow William MUTTON
11-May 1810 Davidstow Mary MUTTON
01-Dec 1812 Davidstow Ann MUTTON
22-Jun 1816 Davidstow Rebecca MUTTON- is this whence the later Rebecca Botterel draws her name, her aunt? Or what that from the Rebecca Burdon-Theophilous Botterell marriage?
06-Oct 1821 Davidstow Robert MUTTON
21-Sep 1823 Davidstow Richard MUTTON
12-Feb 1826 Davidstow John MUTTON
24-Mar 1828 Davidstow Thomas MUTTON
all baptised to RICHARD MUTTON and ELIZABETH, Richard recorded on most at labourer at Trevivian.
I think that RICHARD MUTTON must be the same as the RICHARD MUTTON who married ELIZABETH WISE and have noticed something interesting, perhaps.
RICHARD MUTTON bachelor of Davidstow marries ELIZABETH WISE spinster of Davidstow 05-Oct 1807. Witnesses Messrs. Gerrance and John HAYNE:
At JACOBSTOW, 06-Apr 1809, an Elizabeth Wise marries JOHN HAYNE. There is a possible family connection here. Were the two Elizabeth's cousins?
And then, much earlier.....
30-Oct 1786, FRANCIS SALTERN and MARY MUTTON, Davidstow, witnesses GERRANCE HAYNE and JOHN CHAPMAN.
Another one at Davidstow.
10-Feb 1814 Davidstow John STEPHENS Jennifer MUTTON witnesses PEARSE / STEPHENS _____
Finally, just in case, Burial, aged 70- MADRON 28-Oct 1899 Marazion THEOPHILUS BOTTRELL
