And Ancestry has them indexed as BALLARD! I don't know how they have the Sleeman family indexed but from looking at the image I would hazard a guess and say HAMON. Theophilus was age 55 so was born sometime between 1782 and 1786 in all likelihood. Birthplace was 'in County'. That is something more to work on so will try and take a look later today. CT

I went to one of the local book stores today and purchased a map of Cornwall today. This might help me a little.
With a name a unusual as Theophilus, I though I might be able to find his birthdate and possible his parents. Most of the information on him I got from Ancestry.com. The earlest information I can find is the marrage to Rebecca Burdon in 1805 and then the birth of Richard in 1807. I agree with malcolm and Cornish Terrier he was probably born someytime around 1780 to 1786. I have seen some variations of spelling. Botterill, Bottreaux, Boterell and some others. thanks

It would be really nice if it were as easy as that. But not as much fun though. Unfortunately a name like Theophilus does not make life any easier and I have ample proof. I have (had) one Theophilus amongst my own families and have never been able to find a baptism for him although I know enough because of other records I found. But I recently found another Theophilus in the family and guess what? - I cannot find a birth/baptism for him either! These things are sent to test us so we have to just keep on digging away until we find something that will give us the answer. Thanks to Newlyn we now have just a little more information to work with so I suggest we take that on board and try to use it to our advantage.

I think we have another 'fact' that might be added.
A search of FreeBMD has produced the following Death Record:-
1846 March Qtr Vol 9 Page 81 Launceston Registration District Theophilus BOTTRELL
Although UK Death Certificates are not over-indulged with information we should at least get a 'near' accurate age plus his occupation and abode at the time of his death.
It may be well worth your while to consider purchasing this certificate.
What else that may be found (and may be useful) is the name of the informant.

RICHARD BOTTERELL Christening: 16 MAR 1766 Warbstow son of JOHN BOTTERELL & MARGARET C060131 1729 - 1772 0090272 Film 0883832 Film I also came across this with no parentage mentioned...
2. PHILLIP BOTTREL - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 17 APR 1805 Warbstow, Cornwall, England C060131 1729 - 1772 0090272 Film 0883832 Film
From the Non-Conformist records I found something which at least seems to confirm the Richard/Mary Mutton link and the connection with St Juliot. I can only find Rebecca and Elijah however.
12th April 1835 Rebecca Mutten daughter of Richard Bottrel of Saint Juliot (Labourer) and Mary his wife, who was the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Mutten was born the 22 March 1835 and baptised at Tresparret Chapel in the Parish aforesaid by Frs Haycraft.
2nd May 1837 Elijah son of Richard Botteral of St Juliot (Labourer) and Mary his wife, who was the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Mutton was born 21 March 1837 and baptised at at Tresparret Chapel in the Parish aforesaid by Henry Reed.
I think it might be time for some BMD certs!!!!!! Unfortunately the period we need is before CIVIL registration, but by the same token some things can sometimes pop up on BMD certs, informants, witnesses, addresses (as CT points out too) that may help.

It is my understanding that the name Bottrell is associated with the Bottreaux Castle near Boscastle . Bottreaux is one of the alternate spellings I have come across.

That is how I understand it too. I believe the French spelling was the original one! Have you looked in the Herald's Visitations for Cornwall, I am sure quite a lot of the early family are in there!!!
