Have spent the last couple of days looking further into the family of Elizabeth (nee Quick) Medlin, and it has taken me on a magical mystery tour of the whole planet! ;D
Although I have not yet found all the official records to back it up, I did find several snippets of information on various bulletin boards from descendants that has enable me to piece together some information on Elizabeth's family.
According to the descendants, the "family" (not sure how many this actually means
) moved to New Jersey in the US about 1873 - specifically when son Paul Quick Medlin was about 16 years of age.
Elizabeth (nee Quick) Medlin's husband was John Medlin who I believe is the person of that name that died 1858 Penzance RD, since Elizabeth is recorded as a widow in 1861 at Madron.
The 1880 US census shows the following record at Hanover Township, Morris County, New Jersey:
Elizabeth Medlin, Other, Widow, White, 65, born England, Housekeeper
I suspect that she was living in a poorhouse or equivalent, since there is about 100 other people listed for the same address, none of whome seem to be related.
William John Medllin proved to be the most challenging.
According to the descendants, he was reputed to have married a "society lady" and to have invented something in the US, and to have left New Jersey in the 1870's after some sort of incident.
William John Medlin married 17 Jun 1873 New Jersey to Mary Ann Johns (according to a descendant who has son Wm John's birth certificate with marriage date recorded on it - neither the descendant nor myself has yet found the marriage record)
William & Mary Medlin had one son in New Jersey before later turning up in South Australia, then Victoria. Their children:
William John Medlin b. circa 1874 (NY or NJ), d. 1949 Beechworth, Vic
Charles Medlin b. 2 Mar 1879 Port Adelaide, Sth Australia, d. 1910 Beechworth Vic
Elizabeth Ann Medlin b. 12 Sep 1882 Port Adelaide, Sth Australia, d. 1963 Heidelberg, Vic (m. ?? PAULL)
Paul Medlin b. 14 Jan 1885 Port Adelaide, Sth Australia, d. 1946 Fitzroy, Vic
Alice Medlin b. 1889 Beechworth, Vic
Thomas Medlin b. 1892 Beechworth, Vic
Bertie Medlin b. 1894 Beechworth, Vic
William John Medlin (snr) d. 1929 Beechworth Vic
Mary Ann (Johns) Medlin apparently left her husband around 1910 and took the three younger children with her to New Zealand. Mary is reported to have died 1912 in New Zealand and there are living descendants there today.
Paul Quick Medlin married a Florence A. ?? around 1878 somewhere in the USA, probably in New Jersey.
The family appears on the 1900 census at Dover Town, Morris County, New Jersey

Florence A Medlin, 42, born New Jersey Sep 1857

Mary F Medlin, 12, born New Jersey Aug 1888
Charles C Medlin, 5, born New Jersey May 1895
Gladys M Medlin, 2, born New Jersey Mar 1898
Paul Medlin's reputed birthdate is clearly wrong, given it would make him only 13 years old not the 43 he should be. Likewise it seems that the Q of his middle initial has also been misread as an I.
From family members, son Edward Q Medlin married Florence Alpaugh (b. 22 Nov 1887 Succasunna, New Jersey - d. Oct 1980) and had five children, one of whom died in infancy.
Thomas and Elizbeth (Medlin) Polmear ended up in Victoria also, with three known children born there:
Hannah Polmear, b. 1878 Beechworth Vic
Sarah Polmear, b.1880 Beechworth, Vic
Amy Ethel Polmear, b. 1881 Newtown, Vic
