Here is another one that was nagging at me a quite some time back. Looking at it again - I might just have linked this 'stray Paul QUICK' in. 1841 Census - Plymstock, Devon Jane BAKER, 45, Ind., In County Mary do., 25, In County Phillip do., 14, In County Paul QUICK, 20, blacksmith, Not In County + (+ is marked in the column for 'born foreign parts') Paul QUICK m. Mary Jane BAKER 1842 March Qtr E. Stonehouse, Devon 1851 Census - Plymouth, St Andrew, Devon 26 Russell Street Paul QUICK, head, mar, 33, smith, Cornwall Penzance Mary do., wife, mar, 38, Devon Plymstock Margaret J do., daur, 8, scholar, Devon Plymstock Paul do., son, 4, scholar, Devon Plymouth ISRAEL do., son, 2, Devon Plymouth 1861 Census - Plymouth, St Andrew, Devon 12 Morley Street Paul QUICK, head, mar, 43, blacksmith, Cornwall St Ives Mary J do., wife, mar, 48, Devon Plymstock Margaret J do., daur, unm, 18, dress maker, Devon Plymstock Israel do., son, 12, scholar, Devon Plymstock I am now of the opinion that this was the son of William and Margaret (nee POLMEAR) QUICK. Their son was baptised at St Ives 19th April 1818 and seems to disappear. I have a couple of reasons for forming this link:- 1. In 1841 Paul states his birthplace was 'not in County' (i.e. Devon) and there is a mark suggesting born 'foreign parts'. 2. In 1851 he states his birthplace as Penzance. 3. In 1861 he states his birthplace as St Ives. 4. His first known child is named Margaret. 5. His third child was named ISRAEL. Although baptised (probably born) at St Ives it appears this is the same family who were at Penzance in the 1841 Census with children Margret, Israel and Wilmot. So stating birthplace as Penzance and then later St Ives more or less fits with this family. The fact his first daughter was named Margaret suggests a link as does the naming of son Israel. From previous discussions on the Israel QUICK problems I had concluded that all evidence suggested the name flowed down through one particular family of QUICKs only. Paul's age in the Census is consistent and also matches with the 1818 baptism of the son of William and Margaret. And the more I look at the family (see also my recent William QUICK thread) the more I am inclined to think that this William QUICK was the son of William and Eizabeth (nee HOLLOW) QUICK of Towednack. The problem is - where did William and Margaret end up. And for the few 'smarties' out there - I mean before they ended up 'underground'! ;D

I agree with you. If you look at FreeBMD you will see that the first daughter is named Margaret Jane Baker Quick. Both the mothers names of the parents.

Lannata - in that case I am now more than happy to update my database. I think I can do that much as I am not adding another name. And then I had better get to work and get all this information transferred. But I have a feeling it is going to be a case of pulling two PCs apart and setting up the old 486 HDD as a slave so I can copy the files directly from it. Two folders of 55mb and 52mb are required so I think that might be a little bit much to try transferring with flopppy discs. Of course if the back-up is successful and the new program will accept a restore from those disks then it will be so much easier. CT

A little more of intrigue and interest:-
I cannot find a birth record for Paul s/o Paul and Mary Jane (nee BAKER) even though his recorded birthplace was Plymouth.
And the only Israel who could be possible is:-
Israel Thomas Nesham QUICK Plymouth R.D. 1849 March Qtr Vol 9 Page 473
There appears to be no further record of Margaret or of Israel - either Death or Marriage and, of course, it is a little difficult to be certain of Paul.

No sign of the family in 1901.
FreeBMD Deaths

I have been unable to find any further record of sons Paul and Israel so it might be presumed they departed for other lands.

From the 1880 United States Census - Birth Year <1848> Birthplace ENG Age 32 Occupation Miner Marital Status Race W <White> Head of Household Paul QUICK Relation Self Father's Birthplace ENG Mother's Birthplace ENG Census Place Cherokee, Nevada, California Paul is the only person in this household. Heather - this is most interesting information. I am not sure that Paul is of this family According to FreeBMD we had births for Paul QUICK in 1837, 1842, 1843, 1850 and then 1855 and beyond. All of these were in Penzance R.D. except the last who was Truro R.D. There seems to be no record for the Paul of this thread who was born in Plymouth. The other problem with Paul is that he was age 4 in the 1851 Census and then disappears but as there also seems to be no Death record for him he might well have left England at a young age. Israel is another matter and it is just possible you may have him here. Could Israel 'F' actually be Israel 'T' The only Israel born about the right time was Israel Thomas Nesham QUICK whose birth was registered at Plymouth in the March Qtr of 1849. This is the first birth registered for an Israel after the incept of Civil Registration and he is the only one I know of who was born in the Plymouth area. So that part of things is certainly looking promising. If he can be found in other Census records we may get some additional or corroborative evidence. It would also appear that his marriage did not occur in England so, with any luck, we may stumble upon that. More food for thought - Excellent.

am beginning to think that the Israel Quick born circa 1849 at Plymouth, son of Paul & Mary Jane (Baker) Quick is NOT the same person as the Israel Thomas Nesham Quick born 1849 at Plymouth, Devon.
Paul & Mary's second son Paul does not seem to appear in FreeBDM and it is looking like the younger son Israel likewise does not seem to appear in FreeBDM.
The problem with Israel Thomas Nesham Quick is the Nesham name - no evidence of where it might have come from.
Mary Jane Baker appears to have been the daughter of Phillip Baker & Jane Lavis - so unless it is another generation back no Nesham.
The Israel F. Quick of the earlier note, however is looking like a good candidate to be the son of Paul & Mary.
As Heather said in an earlier post, Israel Quick died 27 Mar 1914 with a "nominal" age of 68 at London, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada. His birth place is given as Plymouth, England with an estimated birth year of 1846.
Israel Quick appears to have arrived in Canada around 1870/1871 according to dates recorded on census records. Israel Quick married Susanna/Susannah/Susannna Lillicrap/Lillicrop

The names of Israel's children: Paul & Maud Margaret are suggestive of the fact that Israel F. Quick "could" actually be the son of Paul & Mary Jane (Baker) Quick.

I don't know how he is indexed but I as damned if I could find Paul - even using the Piece, Folio and Page numbers you supplied. Eventually found him by doing the search for Charlotte WILLIAMS. Armed with all that information I tried a search without the surname and found him indexed as - KUECK! However, you are right - that certainly does look like him. So now we have the complete family in 1861. As regards ISRAEL - keep in mind that every Israel QUICK I have found so far and that I have done any work on can be traced in a direct line straight back to Francks QUICK and Elizabeth PAULE. I have not found the name amongst descendants of any other of the children of Thomas and Zenobia QUICK. And do not discard Israel Thomas Nesham QUICK. He is born at the right time and in the right place and there are not many Israels to begin with. Remember too that there is no other record of him. A bit of research and we should be able to come up with an answer for the two middle names but I am keeping him very much in the picture right now.

As an interesting little excercise I have just tried a search of the 1861 Census for anyone named Israel born between 1846 and 1850 in Devon. The results - 10 with only one of those being QUICK and that was the son of Paul and Mary Jane. A similar excercise for 1851 produced only 9 results of which only 1 was a Quick and he was the son of Paul and Mary Jane. What information do you have to suggest this - it is not something I recall. In fact, when I tried to find a baptism for Mary Jane BAKER I had to wade through something like 1400+ IGI entries and did not find her. Based on the information you supplied I now have the following:- Philip BAKER m. Jane LAVIS 19th October 1812 Stoke Damerel, Devon Mary BAKER bp. 25th April 1813 Plymstock, Devon d/o Philip and Jane Jane LAVIS bp. 16th May 1790 Townstal or St Clement, Dartmouth, Devon d/o Grace LAVIS IF we have the right Mary Jane then it would appear her mother was illegitimate. Perhaps this could be where the name Thomas Nesham comes into things - I don't know.

Nope, not discarding Israel Thomas Nesham Quick. His birth registration year & quarter, together with his place of birth fits very neatly with that of Israel F. Quick in Canada. Actually just had a thought and went back to the censuses to double check something (only glanced fairly quickly at them the other night). Have a look at the following links which should open up the image of the page for the two censuses where Israel has a second initial (I hope). 1881 www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1881/001049-119.02-e.php?id=ON_4353342&PHPSESSID=6hq36t8v0jp58ihg8siishou251901 automatedgenealogy.com/census/ImageArray.jsp?id=70241&columns=2I am interested in getting a second opinion on Israel's second initial. I had looked first at the 1901 census, and to my eye although it has been indexed as an 'F', in comparison to the name Thomas a few lines higher, I believe it is actually a "T". AHA, I thought - confirmation that Israel F Quick is in fact Israel T Quick and therefore without a doubt the Israel Thomas Nesham Quick. However it all fell over when I double checked the 1881 census. The second initial is much clearer and would seem to me to be much more likely to be an "F" rather than a "T". Unless the letter has a tail that has not printed clearly? - perhaps wishful thinking I know. CT, Lannanta would be interested in getting your opinion.

By the way, if you are missing any Quicks, you could do worse than check in Ontario Provence, Canada - There are several hundred of them over there in the late 1800's!

Looking at his age in 1901, and quoting his birth year as 1849, looks pretty much like your man to me.

Lannanta, did you have an opinion on the 1881 census?
That is the one that potentially could undo things, although I do think that he is in fact Israel T Quick, not Israel F Quick.
