I have been promising a couple of Quick problems to play with and here is the first.
The beginning of this problem can be found under the 'James Quick' thread in this section and was actually started by Lannanta with discussion on three different James Quicks.
This problem deals with the 3rd of those mentioned by Lannanta.
I am asking you all to take a look at this and offer what you can and it will involve some more lookups I am afraid.
James QUICK was married to someone named Jane sometime before 1790.
This marriage does not appear in Phillimore for St Ives and also cannot be found in IGI.
I have searched every Parish West of the Hayle along with Germoe, St Hilary, St Erth, Phillack, Camborne, Gwithian, Gwinear and Breage.
Thus we encounter our first problem.
James and Jane had five children (that I know of) and each was baptised at St Ives (IGI)
Jane bp. 13th January 1790
James bp. 3rd April 1796
Robert bp. 21st July 1799
Paul bp. 26th December 1802
John bp. 14th April 1805
There are sufficient gaps here for the possibility of other children.
However, of the five above I have found further information about only Robert.
30 April 1844 at Lelant
Robert Quick widower full age joiner St Ives (father: James Quick, joiner)
Martha Pearce full age servant Uny Lelant (father:James Pearce, miner)
Witnesses: James Pearce, Richard Wall
We know from this that Robert was previously married but, at this stage, we do not know to whom and we do not know of any children.
Now for the Census.
1841 St Ives
Tregenna Place
Robert Quick, 40, joiner
MARY do., 38
Elizabeth Pryor, 18
So Robert was married to someone named Mary.
There is only one possible Death reference for Mary in FreeBMD.
Mary Quick - Penzance R.D. Sept. Qtr 1843 vol. 9 page 115
1851 Census
Wolverhampton, Staffordshire
Little Lane
Robert Quick, head, mar, 51, joiner, Cornwall
Martha do., wife, mar, 38, Cornwall
Martha Pearce do., daur, 6, Cornwall
Mary Jane do., daur, 4, Manchester
1861 Census
St Ives - St Andrews St
Robert Quick, head, mar, 62, master joiner, St Ives
Martha do., wife, mar, 45, joiner's wife, Lelant
Martha P do., daur, unm., 16, St Ives
Mary J do., daur, unm., 14, Lancashire, Manchester
1871 Census
St Ives - St Andrews St
Martha Quick, head, wid., 55, Innkeeper (licensed), Uny Lelant
We now know that Robert died sometime prior to the 1871 Census and a check of 1881 shows no sign of Martha.
In FreeBMD there is only one Death record for a Robert Quick in the Penzance R.D. between 1860 and 1871.
Robert Quick - Penzance R.D. Sept. Qtr 1863 vol.5c page 225
I cannot find a Death record for Martha in the Penzance area so it is possible she remarried or, possibly, left the County.
The last item I think I have to add here:-
28 Dec 1862 by Licence at St Ives
David Russell 24 bachelor Engineer of Santander in Spain (Father: John Russell, Farmer)
Martha Pearce Quick 19 spinster of St. Ives (Father: Robert Quick, Joiner)
Witnesses: Robert Quick, Sarah Paynter
No further information so far on the younger daughter Mary Jane.
Well - I think that is about all I know about this family and it is frustrating.
Anyone with anything at all to offer on this will be most welcome.
I think the required lookups are obvious so I will not list them again here but rather let anyone who is able to do so see what they can find.
Thoughts and comments welcome.
