Amy - I have finally solved the problem of the two grandsons of Emma Jane Quick who were born in America! ;D
And I think this old comment of mine may now be proved likely to be correct.
You will recall that in the 1901 Census at St Ives Emma Jane Quick had two grandsons in the household - William age 10 and Paul age 7 with both born in America.
The last time we discussed this there was no clue as to who the father might have been although it appeared likely that it must have been Emma's son Paul.
Paul was not found in the 1901 Census and the only other members of the family living with Emma were son William age 35 and daughter Edith age 32.
Both were recorded as 'Single' therefore the grandsons could not belong to either of them!
They must, therefore, have been sons of Paul - but we had no proof.
Well I am here now to tell you that they were NOT sons of Paul!
They were in fact sons of WILLIAM!
William is certainly recorded as 'single' in the Census - but I now know this to be a mere technicality.
I believe that William was actually a 'widower' by the time of the 1901 Census.
Whilst trying to tidy up families in other Parishes I happened across a marriage that caught my eye.

William QUICK age 23, bachelor, miner of North Roskear, son of William Quick (dec.) shoemaker
Edith Annie SEMMENS age 19, spinster of Pengegon, daughter of Peter Semmens miner
Witnesses:- Peter Semmens, Charity Marks
William was born about 1866 and was the son of William Quick, shoemaker who was then deceased.
The only William Quick who was a shoemaker and was known to be deceased by 1889 (and could possibly have been the father) was the husband of Emma Jane Shugg.
Now consider the comment above regarding the birth of William Quick in Michigan.
William and Edith Annie married in 1889.
They cannot be found in the 1891 Census.
William son of William and Annie was born in Michigan in 1890.
In 1901 William Quick, age 10, is a grandson to Emma Jane Quick at St Ives.
William Quick married Edith ANNIE Semmens and young William's mother was ANNIE.
That, I believe, is problem solved!
I cannot find a death for Edith Annie in FreeBMD so she may have died in the US.
