TJ - that doesn't quite seem to work. Thomas Thomas married Sarah Lodge in Victoria in 1881 and then John Frederick was born in Stawell in 1882. So how could Thomas Matthew be born in Qld in 1881? And based on this - if there was a child prior to John Frederick then the birth was either illegitimate or very soon after the marriage. In either case I have not been able to find it. Do you have a name for the child or can you tell me the source for the information? CT

Hi TJ - first thing we will need is the location of the events you have quoted. But the answers to your questions are not going to be easy. The dates in question relate to a time for when very little survives for most areas of West Penwith so the most likely answers would more probably be found in Wills. But let's first see exactly where we are dealing with and take it from there. CT

At this point I have no further information about Maddern Thomas.
I do have the record of Margaret's marriage to Richard Berryman with a note saying that she was mentioned in her husband's Will to receive 'four pounds yearly'.
Again we have the problem of very little in the way of Zennor records surviving for that era and I know of only a few Bishops Transcripts.

Rather than try to contact individuals, who are likely to be very busy at this time of year, I suggest you contact the West Penwith Local History group, whose publication 300 Years on Penwith Farms has a section on the Berrymans of Porthmeor Farm.
Another book you might find helpful is ALison Symons "Tremedda Days" which has a section identifying the different families in Zennor in the early 20th century and gives a fascinating insight into farm life then.
