It seems that all too often people post items on our site and then getting a response never bother to answer. I would ask if they are genuine new members they at least have the courtesy to reply

I must say that is something that has frustrated me a number of times over the years! Although I must hasten to add that in one case the new member did not respond because they were in hospital! But for those new members who post queries on joining PLEASE have the courtesy to check back for responses and PLEASE acknowledge by replying. I have on more than one occasion spent up to 48 hours practically non-stop researching in order to provide help for one query!! And I am sure others have spent many hours doing the same and to get no response for all that work is more than just a little frustrating!!! Please do the right thing so that we can maintain the desire to help when people ask for it. CT

Good thoughts, both of you. As a newer member, I have been intimidated by the level of knowledge and research found here. Sometimes, I hold my breath when I post and am actually relieved when there is no response, since that means I haven't missed something obvious.
Thanks to both of you for all the information you have provided, and I welcome new members to not hesitate to respond. It helps all of us.

I too have had this happen to me several times on this site and having spent considerable time in replying so as to help a new member, it is very disheartening when there is no response whatsoever. Kind regards, Mary

Maybe it's time for PG to make a few changes.
On most Genealogy sites such as this if you post a query and receive a reply you are alerted by email, including private messages sent to you. I think a lot of people sign up and ask questions and forget to come back, thinking they will be alerted when they receive a reply, but this does not happen.
Another suggestion to the site owners is if visitors want to view information they must sign up and become a member. Membership is free, so I don't see any problems, unless they are spammers.
Hope I'm not out of line here and just viewing my thoughts. You may like to include your ideas on how to improve things.

Roy - that question/suggestion has been raised before and I have tried, but failed, to find a way to send alerts. Unfortunately there seems to be no provision for it in the Proboards setup.

You can only do what you can CT. It's up to the site owner to make these changes and move forward. Keep up the good work CT.

I like the fact that this board is not commercial and is uniquely focused on the Penwith area. I haunt it whether or not I post and am waiting/hoping for a response As a member, you can contact other members and elect to have messages/responses from them forwarded to the email address you specify when you register. I think that is a nice feature. So, Roy, had any good pasties lately? Zib

PS: I've not explored this, but based on one's Internet service, I would think RSS feeds could be set up to monitor new activity for this site if you don't want to monitor it yourself.

Pasties! Sheesh, I hope Roy's not from Victoria. They put sweetcorn in their pasties.

I've had some great pasties this year. All baked by country bakers in Victoria and no Sweet Corn.

You obviously don't buy in Horsham. It's my lunch stop when travelling from Adelaide to Melbourne. I ask first - in vain hope - and end up buying a steak and kidney pie Are people talking about there being no alert function available? I did just receive this, although I'm not sure I've had any previously? Penwith Genealogy

Well Spike, that is most interesting. Two questions:- 1. How did you receive the notification? 2. Have you made any changes to your profile or any other changes on PG recently. If so then what were they? Whilst awaiting answers to those two questions I have had another look at the forum and have now found what MIGHT BE a possible solution. No guarantees unless someone tries it! I need some of you to try this becase as an administrator some things work differently for me. SO TRY THIS - In the top menu, immediately under the tag 'Penwith Genealogy', you will see the Home, Help, Search etc. buttons. From that list do the following:- 1. click on the PROFILE button 2. under 'Edit Profile and Settings' there should be a NOTIFICATIONS button. Click on that. 3. under Forum Notifications scroll down until you find the PARTICIPATED option. 4. you should see a little box at right which says 'never' and includes a down-arrow - click on this arrow and you will see four other options - 'smart', 'instant', 'daily', 'weekly'. 5. set this box to one of the available options. In this case I would suggest using INSTANT. 6. update a post (this one will probably do) and then see if you get a notification when it is updated again. I don't know if that will work but it is certainly worth a try. CT

thencomesfamily.com/community/thread/60701/check-notification-settingsThis is one of the simpler explanations I have found re: the notification updates. CT, somehow, you opted this board in and made the options available. All I had done so far was set my personal message notification to "smart" which generates an email to me when someone sends me a "PM," I think I did that when I had to upload my avatar again. I do want to check into the bookmarking system so I can mark threads that I may want to revisit easily. It seems they introduced the new system within the last few months. Zib
