I'm trying to sign off on the exits for some members of the Dawe family. Two left by ship, two in coffins.
John Dawe was born in Redruth in 1820. He married Mary Ann Rule bp 1827 in 1844. He was a shoemaker then an omnibus driver. They rarely appear in a census together, although they did manage to have ten children. I'm interested in two of the children, Henry Rule bp 1857 and Frederick bp 1866. These two both ended up in Australia, as did a much older brother. It is possible that the two came out together. I have Henry getting married here in 1885 and Frederick in 1889. Henry is on the 1871 Census but I cant locate him on the 1881. "Freddy" appears in 1881. So, I'm looking for their arrival, particularly Frederick, in Australia. I cant locate them on any ship's list that I have access to. Would anyone else have him in their ships database?
As for John Dawe, I have him in 1881 and he gets a mention around Frederick's wedding as being the late father of. I have a promising looking death of a 66 yo at Truro, September 1885. Should I be able to locate a burial record or some such thing, or is that as good as it gets?
Mary Ann seems to have lingered longer. I have her in 1901 and thought I had her in 1911 but doubt that now. But I cant find a death either.
So I'm not doing too well with deaths at all. Any tips or tricks I should know? Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Spike - I have spent a few hours trying to build a picture of this family in the hope it might make it easier to answer your questions. I have not yet checked the Australian end but it would be useful if you could tell me just where in Australia the Dawe boys located themselves. John Dawe of St Mary's age 66 was buried at Truro 16th August 1885 - It does look likely that this is your man but before I can be sure I need to try and work out what he was doing at Truro. In 1881 He was boarding at Falmouth so that doesn't help and obviously he did not make it to the 1891 Census. I also find it most inconsiderate of John to have apparently not left a Will! I cannot find a burial for Mary Ann Dawe but I suspect that it is her death recorded in FreeBMD in the September Qtr of 1909. The age recorded is 78 which indicates a birth around 1831 and we know Mary Ann was baptized in 1827 but it is far from unusual to find such discrepancies in death and burial records. Checking back over your post and I see you have John Dawe as being born at Redruth in 1820. The 1851 and 1861 Census records show his birthplace as Penryn and in 1881 it is recorded as Budock:- John son of Edward and Ann Daw of Budock baptized 11th February 1821 at Budock (born 24th December 1820) Edward Daw of St Austle and Ann Ham of the Borough of Grampound were married at Creed 29th September 1810 I will take a quick look at some Australian records but if you can give me a little more information about where the boys were it might help. Freddy married in Kadina,SA so he should have arrived at Port Adelaide. Henry was married in the District of Nymagee, NSW. They both ended up in Broken Hill.

It looks like Frederick Dawe married Janet Wilson McIntosh at the Bible Christian Manse, Kadina, South Australia 5th January 1889. One son, Edward Robert, was born at Wallaroo Mines 17th October 1889 after which the family moved to NSW. The NSW Registry has 'played around' with their indexes again and made it virtually impossible to locate a marriage without supplying ALL the details. i.e. I can search for a marriage for Henry Dawe but I cannot find it unless I supply a Christian name AND a SURNAME for the bride. By searching for children I have found that the wife was Eliza J but as I don't have a surname I cannot find the marriage! Seems to me that the only reason for making these type of changes would be to encourage people to purchase certificates and therefore INCREASE REVENUE! CT

Looks like Henry R Dawe died in NSW in 1929 and Frederick 'possibly' died in 1933 although the mother's name is recorded as Sarah in the index. Unfortunately NSW supplies no information about age in the index and now does not even seem to show the district!
No luck with passenger lists into South Australia. Unless something can be found on Trove it will be difficult as I don't think any transcriptions have been done beyond the 1850s so far.

Surname was Thomas, married 1885. I had the name, but tried the search with and without it and didnt have any problems. Might have been in a different area of search that I was in? I agree though, they seem to have made a right mess of things. Frederick died 20 Dec 1938 in St Arnaud, Vic, whilst visiting his daughter. He was brought back to Broken Hill and is buried there with his wife. Janet Wilson McIntosh was the daughter of Mary Jane Davey who we have been discussing in another thread. Edward Robert Dawe died in Feb 1890 fairly soon after the family arrived in Broken Hill. They had another five children, of the last two born one just made it to 100 and the other missed by a few weeks. Henry and Eliza (d 14 Nov 1930) are also buried at BH.

CT Some thoughtful person has identified some (all?) ships that arrived beyond the date the transcriptions stopped. I think they've all been tagged and are listed on the Trove website. I've looked through all of them from 1870 to 1890 previously and did so again today but found nothing. One day something will turn up!

Passenger lists are certainly not the easiest resource to use and unfortunately many of them contain very little other than a surname, first initial and possibly age and occupation. Many also only record that a man travelled with his wife and 'x' children. Newspaper lists are obviously transcriptions so are open to the usual errors and I suspect that not all made it to the newspapers anyway. As you say, hopefully something will turn up eventually.

The thread in this section prior to this one refers to Thomas Riddle and family. One of his daughters married Peter Sun(d)strom. One of their nine children, Emily was a witness to the marriage of Frederick Dawe's sister in law, Mary Jane McIntosh. Sorry! Spike

Hi there
I'm new to this site, but your post was of interest to me.
Mary Anne Rule was my gg grandmothers sister, Mary Ann & John Dawes stayed in Redruth, a few of their children go to Australia. I am in contact with Mary Anne's descendant in Australia. Elizabeth Jane Rule went out with her husband and children to Australia, she is Mary Anne Rule, sister.

Hi Jacksy My connection with the Dawe family is little more than that Frederick married one of the daughters of Robert McIntosh and Mary Jane Davey, one of whom was my great grandmother. I met "Jan" (Frederick's grandaughter)of Adelaide last year and have corresponded with "Jim" from Canberra (his grandnephew) and we met up initially through the MacIntosh Families website. Neither has mentioned Elizabeth and may not even have known that she came to Australia...nor did I. I actually have Elizabeth Rule in my database (m John Hayes). I can see her here now having six children in South Aust. She seems to have arrived here between 1855 and 1858, just putting her outside of pioneer status. I've not had much success finding her arrival date and ship. My interest in the Dawe family is twofold. First to help Jim and Jan where I can and secondly I have a Dawe/Rule married couple on the other side of my family and there's a chance if I dig back far enough I might be able to make a connection. Many thanks for taking the time to join the forum and respond to the thread. Spike

Thanks for the info on the Marion. I have them now, James Hay(n)es 28, Elizabeth Jane (Rule) 23 and Elizabeth Jane 2. They had nine children in SA up to 1874 (two died young). After that I lose track of them. There are suggestions that she died and was buried at Burra but as yet there is no supporting evidence. There is also the suggestion that the family moved on to Victoria, but that's a job for another day. I have ten children for Mary Ann and John Dawe, but that includes three Catherines and two Edwards so that might be the difference? I have eleven for Henry and Thomasine, so I will need to do a recheck. At least I have your Harriet. I have her as bpt 6 Aug 1848 but her actual birth could have been up to six years earlier!! They seemed to have been somewhat tardy in the baptism department. Earlier in this thread we were hopeful that we had found Mary Anne's death in Jul/Aug/Sep 1909...you have the exact date, were we close?
Will be in touch re my contact details for the descendants.
