Hello Cheryl - seems you have a interesting problem here. I can find no record of Melora in FamilySearch or IGI and not in the OPC records. I also tried the early Non-conformist records but there is no sign of a baptism for her. All I can find so far is that there was a baptism at St Blazey in 1849 for Melora daughter of William and Mary Bray. Given it seems to be a rare name I would suggest the possibility that William Bray may have been a brother to your Melora. That is not certain of course but certainly must be considered given that St Blazey and St Austell are neighbouring Parishes. I found the Marriage record for William Treweek and Melora Bray at St Austell in 1833 also and the witnesses were John Bray and Thomas White. From this I would suspect that John Bray may have been her father or possibly her brother but again that cannot be absolutely certain just yet. To see if I could find any further clues I checked the 1851 Census for William and Mary Bray and Melora the youngest of six children living at home. The eldest was then age 20 and Melora 2 so there were very likely more than the six. All of these children were born at St Blazey but it is the birthplace of the parents that caught my eye. Melora's mother was born at Calstock but William Bray was born at Tavistock, Devon. If William Bray was born in Devon and Melora and he are related then it must be a fair chance that Melora was also born in Devon. That would certainly help explain why I cannot find a record for her in Cornwall. Is there anything else you can tell us about Melora? I have checked the South Australian BDM Index and can find no record of another possible marriage and no record of a death for her. The only possible reference I can find is the marriage in 1913 of a Melaura Prudence Treweek daughter of Samuel. Given the name I would presume that she may have been a grandaughter of Melora? And finally - I find this quote rather interesting :- A rather long voyage (perhaps a funeral circumnavigation?) or is there perhaps an error with one of the dates? CT

According to familyhistorysa.info - South Australian Passenger Lists 1803-1854+ the Treweek family arrived in South Australia on 21st March 1849 aboard the 'Pakenham' from Liverpool via Plymouth. Given the average sailing time to Australia was in the vicinity of 90 days then William Treweek must have died within days of the ship sailing from Plymouth. I have been trying, so far unsuccessfully, to find the family in the 1841 Census. If I can manage to track them down then it should hopefully tell me whether Melora was born in Cornwall or not. CT

I have not been able to find William and Melora in the 1841 Census but the following link might be of interest:- familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/r/a/Thomas-Howard-Bray/index.htmlUnfortunately this research seems to have followed the descendants of only one child of John Bray but I think it is likely to be the family you are looking for. I mentioned earlier about Melora d/o William and Mary Bray having been baptised at St Blazey in 1849. And I now think that may be significant. If William and Melora Treweek left for Australia late in 1848 and Melora and the children arrived in 1849 it must be more than coincidence that William Bray named a daughter Melora that same year. I would suggest my earlier suggestion might be correct and that William Bray and Melora were siblings. According to the information found via the above link William Bray was baptised at Tavistock, Devon in 1805 so I suspect Melora was also born in Devon. One of the Online Parish Clerks for Devon might be able to track down some information for you. CT

Found these baptisms to William Treweek and Melora WILLIAM TREWEEK 25 MAY 1834 Saint Austell MARY TREWEEK 04 OCT 1835 Saint Austell
WILLIAM BRAY AND MARY SAMPSON seem to have been the parents of Melora 1849- the only Melora listed in Cornwall although there a few in Devon. I tried variants- brey/bray and grey/gray but nothing came up.
I don't think this family originated in St Austell or environs since the parish records do go back a fair way and they all appear in the mid 19th century bar one baptised in 1818. St Austell, Par, St Blazey, Tywardreath Fowey are all close by so it would be worth looking into other parishes.
CT mentioned the Tavistock connection, this is interesting because it made me wonder if there were no connection with china clay... pure speculation of course but a lot of the Brays and Treweeks on later census returns are listed as miners (not unusual however for Cornwall of the time). Another thing I noticed was a concentration of the surnames in Gwennap- again, may be just a coincidence.
Hope some of this might help

Mal - interesting that you have William Bray and Mary SAMPSON as parents of the later Melora. I had not pursued it any further than what was in the link I provided in which the mother's name is shown as Mary OLIVER. Of course, there is no sign of a marriage for William Bray and Mary Oliver and there is a son to William and Mary who was christened William Sampson Bray. I suspect yet another researcher who has not been doing their homework conscientiously! I'm with you and accept Mary Sampson is probably the mother. CT

Melora remarried a Robert Hayward Garish July 1837 in Adelaide Sth Aust they had one child Robert Garish in 1853-1854
Melora. William Treweek, Melora’s husband died on the voyage out, possibly of a measles epidemic on the boat. They arrived in South Australia from Plymouth on the “ Pakenham” a ship of 660 tons. Melora remarried Robert Garish a labourer who also arrived in 1849 on the “Pakenham”. The family apparently settled at Gilles Plain and Enfield . Sam the youngest son was educated at Mr Wiltshire’s school at Enfield and also at Tam O’Santer Belt. They attended the Enfield Methodist Church. At 16 Sam drove a team of bullocks 500 miles northwards to cart copper. On one occasion, he carted a lump of ore weighing 5tons to Port Augusta. The family moved to Hay valley near Nairne .The family were still living at Nairne when Melora begun to suffer from Dementia and as her husband Robert, could not look after her, she was admitted to the Destitute Asylum where she died. (GRG 28/5/2). Melora died on the 4/1/1886 aged 73 and was buried at the West Terrace cemetery Adelaide. By her age at death, Melora must have been born about 1812. Melora gave her religion as Wesleyan.

Post, post, post .............. and keep on posting! I will look further at the Census to see what more I can get out of it but since reading your latest I have found the marriage of William Bray and Mary, parents of the later Melora. Just a few days ago I completed my acquisition of the St Blazey PRs and so:- St Blazey - 1st December 1829 by Banns William BRAY, sojourner of St Blazey Mary SAMPSON, sojourner of St Blazey Witnesses:- Nancy Hoskin, Edward M___ila So the information I posted from the online family tree is incorrect (Surprise, Surprise! ) when it states that the wife was Mary OLIVER! Will see what more I can find for you. CT

Crazymoona - unfortunately the way you have posted the information makes it extremely difficult to read. Obviously this is 'copy and paste' direct from the site which, due to Copyright, really is a 'No-No'! Best idea, especially to make it readable, is to just type the relevant information into your post. Also less likely to get into copyright trouble. CT

Cheryl - this is still not an easy problem to solve unfortunately. As for birthplaces - well that is certainly not clear-cut and you do seem to have jumped to a conclusion that may not necessarily be correct. Firstly, I don't think there is quite enough evidence yet to suggest that the three Brays (John, James and Eliza) appearing in the 1841 Census 'apparently' with William and Melora Treweek were siblings of Melora. They may well have been but .... And the Census records only that they were born in Cornwall and certainly does not specify a particular place. Illogan is in Penwith Hundred but just because they were there in 1841 does not necessarily mean they were born there. Adding to the problems is William Bray who married Mary Sampson and named a daughter Melora. With such an apparently uncommon name it is reasonable to suggest that William may have been a brother to Melora Treweek. William married Mary Sampson at St Blazey in 1829 but his wife apparently was from Calstock which is right over on the Tamar. And according to the 1851 Census William ws born at Tavistock! In the 1861 Census William's birthplace is again recorded as Tavistock. Devon records are not easy to come by and that may help explain why no baptism has yet been found for Melora. I know that the 1841 Census indicates she was born in Cornwall but it is still possible she was actually baptised in Devon. So I think you may need to do a little research around the Tavistock area with Mary Tavy being a place where a number of Bray baptisms occurred. Mary Tavy is just a few miles from Tavistock so it would be a good idea to not restrict yourself to Tavistock alone. You could try the Devon OPC site to see if there is an OPC for that area and they may be able to do some lookups for you. And once you have a little more to go on then we might be more successful in finding the Cornwall links. CT
