I know that Melora's husband was William Treweek!
But I am talking about William Bray who married Mary Sampson and who had a daughter named Melora. That suggests the possibility that he may have been a brother to the Melora who married William Treweek and this Willliam Bray was born in Devon.

Hi Cheryl - a good move I think. You need to investigate every possibility until the answer is found. Please keep me informed on your progress and if I can help further then I will certainly do so. CT

Hi Cheryl - I am still of the opinion that Melora was the daughter of John and Mary Bray who baptised several children at Mary Tavy, Devon. One of those children was William Bray who married Mary Sampson at St Blazey in 1829. William and Mary also named a daughter Melora in 1849 which I think is rather significant. Unfortunately I still cannot find a baptism for Melora and nor can I find a marriage for John and Mary that I could say was conclusive. Sooner or later the answer will be found but we just have to be patient and keep digging. CT

Hello CT it is Cheryl again I have found an answer at last the OPC for Tavistock helped. This was her reply to me Dear Cheryl: No, you will not find Tavistock's church records on the internet. When the LDS Family History Library volunteers were microfilming in Devon the Bishop of the Anglican (Church of England) discovered that the LDS people were baptising their dead. He stopped them from microfilming any further. So only about 30 or 33 percent of Devon's parishes were microfilmed. I believe some microfilms/fiche are in the Devon Record Office though and you can purchase fiche. Beside purchasing the fiche you have to pay the Church o England 5 GBP (pounds) for each register the fiche you purchase covers.
Anyway, as a consequence of all this uproar Tavistock's records are that easily available. Some of their records were transcribed by a Mr. Stoates and there is a CD called the "Stoates CD that is available to purchase". The Stoates CD baptims stop at 1781. Then the Devon Family History Society published as CD but they started transcribing Jan 1, 1813. So there was a missed section between the two CDs. I have transcribed the missing section and this is when I was persuaded to become the OPC for Tavistock. The baptism you are seeking for Melora Bray was in the missing section. I don't see the marriage for a John Bray and Mary Medland. There is one for a John Bray and a Mary Roberts. Possibly her parents where from another parish and he just moved to Tavistock to work in the mine.
I've extracted all the Bray (& variants) previously so they are as follows: Please note this just covers St. Eustachius parish church and St. Paul Gulworthy Church which was a satellite church of St. Eustachius. Neither does it cover the other parishes surrounding Tavistock which later came under the 'union' of Tavistock. and here she is Bray, Mellora daughter of John & Mary miner, 18 Aug 1811 *** And here are the parents Marriage Bray, John, batchelor & miner & Mary Roberts, spinster, 4 Dec 1802 You were spot on with William Bray being her brother and married Mary Ellen Sampson, John, James and Eliza on the 1841 cencus were her siblings

Hi Cheryl - that is great news and the result of great persistance! I had heard years ago about the problems with LDS being stopped from photographing registers for the reason mentioned here but I was not exactly sure of the locations involved. Hopefully that practice might be stopped and agreeable arrangements made so that these registers might be filmed and made available for those of us who merely want to find out about our ancestors. CT

CT As far as I know these Devon registers have been filmed and are available to view at the Devon Heritage Centre, Exeter, or for a fee from 'FindMyPast' - just not available for free within the LDS IGI.
