CT And I have not found the younger Adelaide in the English birth records. Also, the older Margaret Odinal (O'Donnell in later census). In the 1880 census she has become a "mother in law" Not George's or Rosa's I wouldn't have thought. But maybe Rosa's step mother? Lannanta

This family continues to be very interesting.
The elder George Cornish Glasson had a son to his first wife Mary Biggs, James St Clair Glasson, born about 1835 in Bristol.
He married Helen somewhere and sometime before 1866 - I think she was Scottish.
On the Internet you can find a couple of references to him achieving promotion in various Army positions.
Then he appears in India and out come all the family names again - Arthur John Wharton, James Beames Cornish, and four or five other children, all born in India, and not a Biggs reference to be seen.
I have not found a death for him at this stage and I have not found a marriage, but the above mentioned births are all IGI for Asia.

Most interesting! I can tell you that James St Clair Glasson pre-deceased his wife. Helen Scot Glasson, widow age 65, died 8th June 1911 and was buried 9th June 1911 at Calcutta, Bengal, India Use FamilySearch and go to 'Asia & Middle East' and you will find a few links for Indian records. Unfortunately the ones of most interest do not have images but there are a lot of good records there all the same and quite a lot for Glasson if you check all three categories - Births & Christenings, Marriages and Deaths & Burials. I found a couple of my Trewhella people there not so long back and you will find more information that what is in IGI. I have not been able to find the marriage either but if he has a military background you might need to look at Overseas Chaplains records or Consular records maybe. CT

Morning CT
I have never looked for anybody in India or the like before and looking at this family they appeared to mostly stay in India for quite some time. I do not intend to get too carried away at the moment, rather I will just record the obvious information from places like IGI etc. It is interesting to see the names repeat themselves.
First child around 1865, John Herbert St Clair Glasson, died 1877 aged 12. So a probable India marriage.

Lannanta - I considered the likelihood of a marriage in India also but unfortunately it is not in the collection currently on FamilySearch. If Helen was age 65 when she died in 1911 then she was born around 1845 making her about 20 when the first child was born. Based on that I would be looking for a marriage no earlier than about 1863. Assuming James was already in the Army when he married then India would seem the most likely place for the Marriage but it would be worth checking for other possible postings he may have held prior to 1865. All interesting stuff for another day in any case. CT

Lannanta - according to FamilySearch 'India Births and Baptisms, 1786-1847' the first child of James St Clair Glasson was born in 1864.
George Arthur Walter Glasson born 1st May 1864 and baptised 16th May 1864 Madras, Madras, India Father - James St Clair Glasson Mother - Helen
So the marriage probably occurred sometime in 1863.

...., and not a Biggs reference to be seen. And there is a quite reasonable explanation for this! When Mary Biggs married George Cornish Glasson she was a WIDOW having been first married under her maiden name of NICHOLS to Henry Biggs at St John the Baptist, Bristol 1st April 1820. What is most interesting about this first marriage is the use of the name GLASSON as a second Christian name for three of her four children with Henry Biggs. Fanny Glasson Biggs born 1st March 1821 Robert George Biggs born 10th March 1822 Henry Glasson Biggs born 30th August 1825 Thomas Glasson Biggs born 26th June 1826 All were born in Bristol but there is one more VERY INTERESTING point to be made. Robert George Biggs was baptised 9th December 1827 at St Stephens, Bristol The other three who all share Glasson as a second name were all baptised together 30th May 1830 at St Stephens, Bristol. Now there is a little item for you to chew over! ;D CT

Lannanta - well done, mate. I have never seen an Indian newspaper and the thought never entered my head that there might even be one! But good ferretting all the same. With the information here (even though the groom's name is not quite correct!) it might be possible to find more about Ellen/Helen Scott. The death record indicates she was born about 1845/6 and we now have a name for her father. And I would begin with the assumption that she was probably born in England. 1851 Wales Census - I have just added yet another correction to Ancestry to change GLOSSON to what is very clearly GLASSON. Undoubtedly we have Robert George Biggs with his half-brother James S Glasson but I wonder if it is the family they are with that might be more interesting! Martha Francis age 49, wife of a Master Mariner, born ST IVES, CORNWALL This is probably John FRANCIS and Martha FREEMAN who were married at St Ives 15th December 1824 but I cannot see any likely connection between the families. Lannanta - take it any way you can get it mate! And I should probably correct the link between Robert George Biggs and James Glasson from 'half-brother' to 'step-brother'. But then there is still that middle name of Glasson for the other Biggs children that is perplexing. CT

CT I also had a look at an image of the 1851 census for Kent sent to me by Lamorna and noticed that young Helen was born in Scotland around 1844. I though that it would then be easy to find a marriage between an uncommon name like Walter and Eleanor. Well I learnt that even in 1844 in Scotland they were still parish marriages and although there were two in 1843, Eleanor Brown and Eleanor Corrie, neither gave enough information and neither maiden name appears in the myriad of names used in the Glasson grandchildren. So the three were baptised in 1830 with the middle name GLASSON. Could this have simply been to reflect who their 'now' stepfather was - i.e. George Cornish Glasson - married to Mary in 1828, and Robert missing out simply because for some reason he had already been baptised in 1827?

Lannanta - I have not seen the 1851 Census for the Scott family so can't comment at the moment. The situation with the Biggs children is probably the one that requires more attention at the moment and while I see your point about the three children baptised after the second marriage of their mother I think a closer look suggests something much more complex. The records show that all four of the Biggs children were born prior to 1827. Robert George Biggs was the second child yet the only one of the four who did not have Glasson as their second name. Apart from not having Glasson as part of his name what else was different about Robert George Biggs? Why was he baptised on his own when he had an older sister and two younger brothers who were also as yet unbaptised? Why is Robert the only child who was not given Glasson as a second Christian name? And WHY were the other three children given the name Glasson at all? I think more needs to be known about Henry Biggs and Mary Nicholls. CT
