BINGO! - Again. Just tried a different attack on the 1851 Census. From 1841 I knew that Elizabeth Pearce (wife of Thomas) was born around 1778. So I have done a search for Eli* (wildcard) born Cornwall between 1773 and 1783 and living at Phillack in 1851. Indexed as PECORA! 1851 Census Hallankene, Phillack Elizabeth PEARCE, head, wid., 72, proprietor of land, Gwinear CHARITY do., daur., unm., 33, attend her mother, Phillack We now know that Charity d/o Thomas and Elizabeth Pearce was not the Charity Pearce who died in 1850. The door is still open for this to have been Charity d/o Paul Quick. CT BTW - Charity Pearce was still unmarried and still living at Hallankene, Phillack in 1861.

Re Charity Pearce, living with the Quick family in 1841, YOB given as 1811, I believe this was the daughter of William & Harriet she was born abt 1811.and was the sister of Mary, Pauls wife, not the daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth who was born 1816

I think you mean daughter of William and Charity. She and Mary were sisters to William Pearce who married Harriet. Charity d/o Thomas and Elizabeth was brought into the discussion whilst I tried to eliminate possibilities for the 1850 Death and she was indeed born in 1816. Charity d/o William and Charity was born in 1808. CT

I have missed this entry in the 1861 census for Hannah, as well as William and Nanny who were living next door. So, does this mean that Anna came back from Australia which would explain the reason why there is no apparent information about her in Oz?

I thought for a brief while that I had solved the mystery of Anna Quick. However on searching the complete available records for the voyage of the Boanerges I found that I was incorrect. Because I did not find her with Edward and family on arrival my first thought was that she had died at see - or married during the voyage. Whilst Anna was recorded with Edward and his family in the outgoing Passenger List it must be noted that the names were recorded in alphabetical order. There were around 444 passengers on board and they seem to have been grouped into two or more alphabetical lists. On the Arrival List Anna did not disembark with Edward but is recorded a number of pages later. Edward stated he was going to Ballarat to his 'relative' Paul Quick. Anna, however, had no notes against her entry to say who or where she was going to. So it certainly appears that Anna arrived safely in Victoria but ..... CT

I have now received copy of Birth certificate for Anna Quick born St Ives Father Paul Quick Excise Officer Mother Charity Quick formerly Pearce, so this must be Mary's sister who was living with the Quick family in 1841, I don't think Mary & Paul actually married as I also have the Death certificate for the Charity Pearce who died in 1850 this shows she died in St Ives, aged 41, (this fits with the age of Mary's sister Charity Pearce) a spinster , so it seems pretty conclusive that Paul had a fling after the death of his wife with his sister in law.

Hello Brumbird
I think that Paul's fling with Charity probably started long before the death of his wife Mary given the different addresses of the various people in the 1841 census, and also given the reported protracted illness suffered by Mary.
I was wondering if it would be possible to get a copy of the certificates that you have, or perhaps an extraction of the detail on them please?

A good part of the puzzle solved but I would still like to know what happened to the three daughters - Charity, Mary and Anna.

Hello All, Seasons Greetings. It's 13.15 here in England & the dinner is cooking niceley so while waiting for the family to descend I decided to have another look for the elusive Charity J.P.W Quick and eureka! there she is in the death index on Find My Past - Charity Jane Pryor Williams Quick, Clifton 4th quarter 1842.

Well done! And thanks to Newlyn I also have that information which I received just prior to checking this thread again!! I checked FreeBMD again using only the Quarter, Year, Volume and Page Number but the entry does not appear. Yet another one that has fallen through the cracks! CT BTW - Only Mary and Anna to find!

I know this is a really old post, and I apologise for perhaps repeating something that everyone knows already, but I have the death cert of Paul Quick (died 23 May 1886 at Ballarat Benevolent Asylum) who married Mary Pearce. The children listed are: Charity Jane dead Elizabeth dead William Arundel dead William Williams dead Edward 50 Mary 46 - there is no mention of an Anna He is listed as being the husband of Mary Pearce and that there was a 2nd marriage with no name - there is a further addition to the certificate stating the second marriage was to Elizabeth Tucker. (I have it as Elizabeth Tucker m.1843 Bristol)

Hi Sally - no problem opening or adding to old posts. Every bit of information is useful and I think we all know it can take years sometimes to find that information. I was not aware of that second marriage however FamilySearch does have a record of it in the 'England, Bristol Parish Registers, 1538-1900' collection. Paul Quick (son of Gabriel) married Betty Tucker at Bristol St Stephen 5th June 1843 If you do a reverse search on this you will find that Betty was the daughter of William HAWKINS indicating she also had been previously married. A little more searching produced the following from 'England, Marriages, 1538-1973':- William TUCKER married Betty HAWKINS 2nd October 1825 St Philip and St Jacob's, Bristol AnnaQuick was born at St Ives 28th September 1842 with parents recorded on the Birth Certificate as Paul Quick, Excise Officer, and Charity Quick formerly Pearce. That is not exactly correct given Paul and Charity never married. Charity Pearce died at Stennack, St Ives, 29th March 1850 at the age of 41. In the 1851 Census Anna Quick can be found visiting the Anthony family at Carniney, Lelant. She was then age 8 and is recorded as 'Excise Man's daughter'. As her father married in Bristol the year following her birth it is quite likely that the other children of Paul Quick were not aware of her existence even though Paul was back at St Ives in 1851 with children Edward and Mary.
