My head seems to be doing a bit of spinning also! I need a few hours sleep but before I do I will see what I can find about Christiana. In 1871 she is a servant in the household of John T Fleming at Penzance. In 1881 John and Christiana Carbis are living at 3 James St, Penzance - both age 38 and Christiana born St Just. John Carbis married Christiana Nankervis Penzance R.D. 1879 June Qtr Vol 5c Page 355 My problem here is that there were two girls named Christiana Nankervis born not far apart - one in 1842 and one in 1843. I cannot find a death for either of them so some more checking will need to be done to see if one or both the above are your girl. In 1891 John and Christiana Carbis are still living at the same address in Penzance. In 1901 John and Christiana Carbis are again at the same address. Hmmm - maybe this is the other Christiana! Then again - maybe your Richard Barker lead is not right. I have just found 'a' Richard Barker with wife Christina (age 57) living at West Ham in 1901. The age for Christina would be about right BUT she was born at BUDE which is in the Northeast of Cornwall. Now this is interesting. In 1891 Richard and Christina are at West Ham but this time Christina says she was born at St Just! BUT her age is only 40. The eldest child in the household in 1891 is John who was then age 19. This means that Richard and Christina would have probably married no later than 1872 - unless this was a second marriage. And it only gets better! In 1881 the family was still at West Ham and Christina is now 'Prestina' age 36 - born ...... wait for it ................ST IVES! The eldest child in the family then was Thomas age 12 and born at Woolwich, Kent. So the marriage would have occurred before 1869. In 1871 we have what 'looks' to be the same family living at Brighton, Sussex. Problem is that the whole family is recorded as being born at Brighton and they have a daughter Christena age 5. But this has to be the same family because there is only one Thomas Barker born about 1868 or 1869 whose father is Richard. My opinion at the moment is that your Christiana is more likely to have married John Carbis. CT

Okay - looks like I have to rethink this situation. Strange that she could never remember where she was born! Or maybe she had been a naughty girl and didn't want anyone to find her. I will have another look at this and see if I can find anything new. There is a possibility I might find the marriage for you provided it did occur in England so that will be the first thing on the agenda. If my hunch is right I will hopefully have something later today. CT

My ideas so far about finding that marriage are not working but I will keep trying.
Meantime - you say you have a birth certificate for the first child and you also have some details of the death of the second daughter Christiana.
Could you please send me those details as they appear on the certificate for the first child and also all details you know about the death of the second.
I cannot seem to locate them in FreeBMD for some reason.

Hi ct it is very good good of you to do all this for me, i paid for a search to be done of the marriage records in Liverpool, they came up wih no record know of he marriage, i even got in touch with the West ham archives and paid for them to do a search, the only thing they could come up with is they thought Richard Barker had been married before, that is why there is no record of him and Christina's marriage, Richard came from Shropshire Culmington, and Christiana Cornwall big difference in mileage, i will get out the certificates of the dead children later for you, i know they boh said Canning Town which is in the district of West ham, and both had the parents names as Richard and Christina, how did we get to these two people it stared out asking about Chritiana parents, i will have to take a look in the mirow to see if i excist ha ha kind regards Brenda

Hi Ct, I have looked through my files, Richard and Christiana daughters were born 1866, even though i cant find where she was registered, their other daughter Christina was born West ham 11th July 1879 and died in 1880, why would they name both daughters with the same , name , the certificate states both parents were Richard and Christiana Barker. Regards Brenda

Thanks Brenda - will try and do a little more on this over the next couple of days after my head has had time to clear a bit. I did notice the 1879 birth for Christina and suspected it would belong but like you cannot find the earlier one. However that is not totally unusual as many registrations were missed one way or another. I think we probably got onto this couple because I generally try to find out a little more about the children and where they were in case it turns up a further clue to help identify the parents. Unfortunately it has not yet happened in this case but occasionally one of the children will be with an aunt or uncle or even grandparents. We can only keep trying. CT

CT you go and have a weeks rest you need it after all his trouble, i have all the censures of the Barkers and the death certificates of both Christina and Richard, dont think Christiana was married to John Carbis as by the time that marriage took place, my Grandfather had been born to Christiana and Richard Barker, they also had four children by that date, i just think one or the other hd been married before and these two never did marry, how great scandle in the family. Thank you again rgards Brenda

No worries Brenda. BTW - the other Christiana (married John Carbis) was probably daughter of Thomas and Mary Nankervis. I spotted her while doing a Census search earlier on. Will follow up on her one day. CT

Hi Brena - I am not quite sure what you mean by this comment Unfortunately Thomas died before the 1851 Census so we can only deduce a probably birth at St Just but it does seem likely given two baptisms there about the time his age in 1841 suggests he would have been born. Of the two you have listed here I would be inclined to think that Thomas was the son of Thomas and Jane but that is only based on bare circumstantial evidence at the moment. Thomas did name a son James but not until he had already named sons Thomas, William, John and Isaac. It appears likely that Isaac comes from the Champion family so I would be looking at Thomas or William or, perhaps, John being the name of Thomas' father. Your Thomas also had three daughters that I am aware of but none were named Ann. The two possibilities you are working from involve either Ann or Jane as the mother so again the circumstantial evidence would suggest that his mother was Jane. That was the name of his wife and also of his first daughter with the others being Christiana and Elizabeth. I will need to think more on this one but hopefully one of our members who is a little more familiar with St Just people might be able to help out. CT

Hi Brenda - for some reason I had it in mind that we had two Thomas Nankervis (sic.) baptisms but it appears I was mistaken! So - I have been having a look at the St Just book to see what I can find. Although not totally conclusive the results are a little interesting. These are the children I can find at St Just for Thomas and Jane:- Jane Nekervis d/o Thomas and Jane bp. 11th November 1803 Henry Nekerwis s/o Thomas and Jane bp. 15th December 1805 Thomas Nekerwis s/o Thomas and Jane bp. 22nd January 1809William Nekerwis s/o Thomas and Jane bp. 20th January 1811 Hmmm - that might make a little bit of difference to the problem! I also checked and, at least at St Just, there is no other marriage for a Thomas to Jane to account for any of the above. CT
