Oh Dear. Seems Malcolm has a little catching up to do. I have just run into a slight, little, teensy weensy problem! I have just reached the LIMIT of entries in my old 486 Database for Relatively Yours. Just entered number 99,999 And that is it! Can display everything except for that last entry which freezes the program. Looks like I am going to have to do some playing around here and get everything transferred to my new system - BUGGER! Hope I have enough floppy disks to perform a complete back-up! This is going to be FUN - NOT!

Try backing up in a different program. Perhaps PAF or Legacy. Both freebees. Not sure if they will accomodate the higher figure, but worth a try. Also, could try saving your gedcom in a zipped form. Maybe Winzip. I have used this to send large gedcom via e mails. Hope this helps. Roy

Thanks Roy. Should not be a real problem - just the CD drive in the old 486 doesn't want to work anymore so I need to backup RY to floppy. Other problem is that I had not moved everything to the new RY program as I want everything to be spot on - which means individually entering everything again. I have a copy of PAF that I can try but as far as I know any dates entered in Julian format will be atomatically updated to Gregorian - and that will cause real headaches. RY does not have that problem. But there is another option with the latest version of RY - I believe I can set up multiple databases so I can use one for the old data and have another for all the re-entered stuff. Main drama there is that I will have to keep switching between databases - or windows at least. I can still use the 486 to view my existing data and probably update individuals but I just cannot add any more names to it. Will find a way. Thanks again. CT

Oh what fun! Not long after beginning the first phase of the backup - compaction of data files- the POWER FAILED! And PAF is to big a file to transfer to the 486 without a CD-Rom drive so ...... Perserverence is the word!

I use PAF too, never had a problem but have three backups on 2 computers and one external hard drive! PS Where do I come into this? LOL!

Sorry Malcolm - certainly no offence intended but it was merely a reference to your 1000 names and more of a warning that some programs do have limits to the amount of names they can handle. Newer versions of RY are pretty much only limited by the size of your hard drive so I should not have the problem again. Another learning curve (crikey - almost spelt that as 'lurning' ) - but I need to ensure preservation of data along with the flexibility of the way I have been set up so far. I also need the capacity to enter and build on families whilst I am answering and helping with queries so that I can keep a picture of the indivual problems. About to start removing Hard Drives and moving stuff around so all should be well again very soon. The old system is still okay - I just cannot add any more names to it. I can add data about the indivuals and move them around where corrections like that are necessary so I am not at all hamstrung. One more little think to ensure I have everything I want to do properly planned and then ....... CT

It would seem that I have been successful - AND without breaking anything. ;D Successfully removed HDD from 486 and copied all data to the HDD on my new system. Only one slight hitch when the old HDD was not recognised. But I realised quickly that I had not set the jumper to configure it as a slave device. And then learnt something - the jumper pins to do that are tucked up underneath the drive instead of at the rear like they are nowadays. A little bit of playing around with RYII to work out just how to peform the database migration and away I went. All seems to have gone smoothly - so now I can begin the next step. I need to log a few things for future reference because this is not where the data will ultimately end up. And I need to ensure that if I make updates to information on the old system that I do exactly the same with the migrated database. WHY?? - because I can still use all the information on the old system and it is displayed on a completely separate monitor so that I don't have to switch between windows. Much more learning to do before I make the final move to the latest version of RY3. AND - all the interaction with everyone that has become part of Penwith Genealogy has helped and continues to help with those corrections. Thank you all and keep up the good work. ;D
