Was your Cornish ancestor a member of the clergy? If so, then there is a great possibility that they attended either Oxford or Cambridge to obtain their Degree in Theology..... Or do you know that one of your Cornish ancestors did attend one of these universities?
I can do look-ups in the Oxford (1500-1886) and Cambridge (1261-1900) University Alumni for you. Some of these entries give you a wealth of information (mainly those from the mid to late 1800's) not just the date of entry and date they obtained their degree but also info such as
Fathers name and profession/trade
Position in family (1st son of, 5th son of)
Whether father, grandfather, brother, cousin, uncle attended
Career information
Papers/Books written and dates
Lifetime achievement/s
Who they married and date
If this marriage unites two noted University families
Number of children
Date of death, address at the time and where buried
To give you an example entries from Cambridge University Alumni for John and Richard Edward BOYNS born St Just in Penwith read:
Name: John. Boyns
College: ST JOHN'S
Entered: Michs. 1871
Born: 1852
Adm. pens. at ST JOHN'S, Aug. 3, 1871. S. of Richard. B. 1852, at St Just, West Cornwall. Matric. Michs. 1871; B.A. 1875. Brother of the next.
Name: Richard Edward. Boyns
College: ST JOHN'S
Entered: Michs. 1877
Born: 19 Jun 1857
Matric. Non-Coll. Michs. 1877. Adm. pens. at ST JOHN'S, Jan. 28, 1878. B.A. 1881. S. of Richard, merchant. B. June 19, 1857, at St Just, Cornwall. Adm. at the Middle Temple, Nov. 24, 1879, as s. of Richard, purser of mines, of St Just, Penwith, Cornwall. Called to the Bar, 1883. Occurs in the Law List, 1938. Brother of the above.
To do the look up I need (Names and place of birth is often enough though)
Given and surname
Father's given name if known
Place of birth or
if member of clergy something like, in which town they were rector or which Diocese they were Bishop of.... where they served is what I am trying to say lol!!!
Best regards
