Time for me to seek a little help once more.
This will be the first of a possible number of Trewhella-related queries I have just found.
Whilst searching FreeBMD recently for information relating to another query I happened to spot an interesting name - John TREWHELLA Keigwin.
I believe I know who this fella was and will pursue him later.
But I decided 'on a whim' to try a few different searches using TREWHELLA as a second christian name and with no surname entered into the search.
For example - John Trewhella, Martin Trewhella, Ann Trewhella and so on. (Using mainly first names that I could think of at the time that were common in the family.
So - Martin Trewhella CHAMPION born 1875
This is one of a few that came out of 'left field'.
Checking the 1881 Census I found the family of a widowed Sarah CHAMPION at St Ives.
This famioly was from Lelant and further investigation proved that it must have been the family of:-
John CHAMPION m. Sarah EDDY 1st February 1830 at Lelant
At 1881 Sarah still had unmarried daughter Mary and unmarried son Richard J living with her.
AND grandchildren Martin T and Loveday A T CHAMPION.
After hours of searching I can not determine the parents of these two grandchildren and I cannot find a reason for the use of the name TREWHELLA. (I suspect the grandaughter is Loveday Ann Trewhella CHAMPION).
Sarah died in 1890 and in 1891 Martin and Loveday were with their Uncle Richard and Aunt Mary.
Loveday married John Uren CLARK in 1898 and in 1901 Martin was boarding up in Lancashire and working as a quarry labourer.
Also with Martin was a James CURNOW who was also born in Cornwall about 1875.
So - who did Martin and Loveday belong to?
Richard remained and unmarried as did his sister Mary.
Other children of John and Sarah:-
John born 1830 - ddisappears
Elizabeth Eddy (by 2) - both died young
Benjamin - disappears
William - married Jane STEVENS at St Ives in 1867 and had at least seven children - his daughter Sarah Ann CHAMPION married a Joseph QUICK in 1895
(Lannanta and Gandolf - I do not know who this Joseph QUICK was because he was not at home on the night of the 1901 Census. )
James - disappears
Martin Pascoe - died in 1874 age 19
So the options for parents of Martin and Loveday seem limited.
Mary must be considered a possibility and she appears to have been the only surviving daughter.
Or did one of the 'disappearing' sons marry and father these two?
And just how does the name TREWHELLA fit into this picture?
I have been able to rule out a direct connection via the marriage of a Trewhella girl to one of the Champion boys.
To find the baptisms would be the most helpful answer (short of spending money to buy the Birth Certificates) but I am having difficulty locating them.
They do not appear in the St Ives OPRs, the OPC site, the St Ives Methodist New Connexion or Primitive Methodist baptisms.
The only other item I have that might suggest a connection:-
Martin TREWHELLA of Madron was born in 1815 and married three times.
His third wife was Nanny FOX nee CHAMPION.
Problem is that there appears to be no connection between Nanny and the family of John and Sarah.
Nanny was born about 1828/9 and was the daughter of a John CHAMPION and I think I have found her at Newlyn in 1841 with parents John and Jane and several siblings who were all born after 1830.
And although she married Martin TREWHELLA as her second husband the marriage did not occur until 1879 - four years after Martin Trewhella CHAMPION was born.
Any ideas and/or help very much appreciated.
