Hi
I am new to Penwith Genealogy and pretty new to Genealogy too! I have a partial family tree that starts with a Manxman John CORKIL (KALKHILL) b 14 mar 1773 Malew arriving some time end of 1700's. He may have done a runner leaving a family in Manx or Liverpool! He married Anne PHILIPS Madron 14 Jan 1802. They had a number of children possibly 8 or 9. He seems to be recorded as COCKLE in Madron/Penzance Baptism registers. I can find 2 John COCKLE's (bpt Aug 1802 and Jan 1805) George Phillips COCKLE (bpt 5 May 1809 Penzance) Jane Phillips COCKLE (Married James Opie Jun 1834) William and Mary COCKLE (twins) bapt 24 Sep 1806, Anne COCKLE (b 25 sep 1816), Isabella COCKLE b circa 1822. She married John BUCK Mardon Sep 1851.
William COCKLE married an Elizabeth HONEYCHURCH born around 1804 or 1805. I can find a baptism for an Elisabeth HONEYCHURCH in Madron 27 Aug 1802 d/o William HONEYCHURCH but would like more info on this family. William and Elisabeth had 3 children ( 2 Johns (1838?), (29 Aug 1842) and Priscilla (1840?). The middle John was my GG Grandfather on mothers side.
The Cockles ( COCKELLS, CORKELLS) were all fishermen and Pilots and I think Coastguards. The John who arrived from IOM had a brother Thomas b 8 Nov 1771. I came across a reference to a Thomas CORKHILL as Coast guard at St Mawes (record b. IOM 1795) His son William was also a Coastguard b. 1832 Manaccan.
I wonder whether there is a link between these two CORKHILL/CORKELL families?
If anyone can add more information or help it would be most appreciated!

Fred - I will begin the discussion in the Madron Musings section (as mentioned in the Welcome Thread) with the marriage of Jane COCKELL and Henry TREWHELLA.
Having never pursued the COCKELL family I will attempt to find Jane's place in relation to what you have mentioned and we can pursue matters from there with the aid of (at least to me) additional information.
I have a number of HONEYCHURCH names in my database but many of them are, I think, from St Erth and other areas.
Of interest to your discussion will be the Elizabeth HONEYCHURCH who married Henry TREWHEELA at Madron in 1834 so that may also find a home at Madron/Penzance.
But first to COCKELL and over to Madron.

Hi Londoner
This ties in pretty well with what I have. Following the George Phillips COCKLE line I have George P C marrying a Jesse Jemetha (known as 'Jane') JENKINS in Madron 3 June 1833 but I have not been able to check this. Children Elizabeth Jane (b? 1832) married a Benjamin Hocking (no details). Priscilla((b 1838) married Johan FISCHER and they had a child Jane Jeanette b 21 4 1862. (but not the workhouse one - think that's William and Elizabeth (HONEYCHURCH) CORKELL's child's child). The other children of George and Jane C are Louisa (b abt.1840) Ann (b abt. 1843) George ( b abt1846) and John b. 1848)
Other bits of the picture. Jane Phillips COCKELL (George's sister) married James OPIE Madron 8 Jun 1834 (needs checking)
I would love to know if there is a connection between the Customs man CORKHILL and the others as both seem to have left IOM at about the same time.
Must get on with some real work!!

I will continue this later in the Madron thread but, briefly, here is what I have found so far.
Firstly, it would appear you are correct about George Philips Corkell being the father of Jane Trewhella.
Ages are all over the place but I can see no alternatives given the severe paucity of the name COCKELL (var.) in Cornwall.
And it seems also that the name 'Philips' was very quickly dropped when it came to recording BDMs and also in the Census records.
He appears to have died in 1877, age 61, and was recorded as George CORKELL.
Jane was a widow in 1881, age 68, and died 1889 age 84.
Jessey JENKIN d/o James & Elizabeth bp. 28th March 1813 Scilly Islands Parish.
Looks like she became Jesse Jennetta JENKINS and afterwards simply JANE.
And it also seems the name COCKELL was used 'temporarily' and mainly, from what I can see so far, in the Census of 1841 and 1861. I have not looked at 1871 yet but the name was CORKELL in 1851 and 1881.
Have made some notes to work from and, as I said, will continue this later on.
