Strays are basically people involved in an event such as Marriage or Baptism in a Parish other than there own. e.g. Joe Bloggs, of Zennor married Dimity Sims, of Falmouth at Perranarworthal What to do with your strays at Helston? I don't think we have a section devoted to Helston so perhaps a new Thread under (maybe) 'Surnames of General Interest' entitled 'Strays' might be an idea. Unless you can find somewhere you think might be more appropriate.

Hi there.... The problem with my strays is that they do not list parentage or dates, there is a code number and that is it. I have found a William Davies born at Penzance with a number and that is it.... the number is not a date and I do not have it at hand... help....!

Those actually look to me like they are Helston people involved in an event elsewhere - probably a marriage.
But I cannot work out what the numbers mean.
Is there no 'key' to these in the preamble to the document??
They 'could' be something like volume, page and line number - but what volume?
Where exactly did you find this information - perhaps I can log into it and have a look for myself unless another of our members can supply an answer.

Had a look and found the location of the details Malcolm supplied, on the Meneage Peninsula website. The preamble says: Strays - If looking for people who orginally came from one of the Parishes on the Meneage Peninsula, then below are onsite links to some nearby Parishes where many Meneage born people were found during the 1861 Census as well as many people from other areas of Cornwall. The numbers quoted stand for Enumeration District, Folio and Page; the place name quoted is where the person was born. Will have to have a look at the census to find out when the William and Elizabeth quoted were born approx. Have to go out today, but will check later if no-one else has had a chance in the meantime

OK, so I couldn't wait until later and had to look for them now . William was a border with the Paul family at Church Street, Helston in 1861. He is an unmarried 24 year old male, born in Penzance, and his occupation is Tailor. (Approx year of birth 1837.) Now for Elizabeth. She was in the household of W Harris, Innkeeper, at Meneage Street. Elizabeth J Davies,Servnt,U,18,Chamber Maid, b. St Hilary, Cornwall (Approx year of birth 1843.) No time to do any more at the moment, but will check back later.

Interesting.... thanks for the look up, but yet again it is not the one we are looking for!!! If only I could find a death certificate reference or something then I could locate this infuriating ancestor of mine, who I am sure is having a good laugh right now at the whole thing!!!

I reckon there might be a few of us with ancestors at the same party!
All having a jolly good time and laughing at our expense. ;D
