G'day 'hockingkin'. Will do my best even though this particular marriage is not in my database. (I do have the record in Phillimore & Taylor) Part of the problem here is that the name of 'Hocking' had many different methods of spelling throughout the records. In fact it is shown as 'John HOCKIN, butcher' in the P&T Marriage Index. I have seen it as Hocken, Hockyn, Hocking and even more variations. If you could provide a little more information it might make it easier to work out who he was. A direct line of descent would be of some help but the more information you can give about the earlier generations leading back to John would probably be the most useful. Do you have details of any Wills or other data that might be of help to us. The more you can supply about what you know the easier it will be for me to try and help you out. Also - more information on the Cattran side of things might well be of use. Will do my best for you.

John Hockin was, according to IGI, the son of Pascoe and Dinah Hockin. I cannot find a marriage for Pascoe and Dinah but suspect it possibly occurred at St Buryan sometime shortly before April 4th 1746 when their daughter Elizabeth was baptised. There is a gap in the St Buryan Marriage Register (according to Phillimore & Taylor) from November 1741 through August 1754. Much of 1743 is included in P&T and is very likely from a Bishop's Transcript. Pascoe is possibly bp. at St Buryan May 21st 1720 as son of John and Mary Hockin. I can find no marriage for John and Mary Hockin at St Buryan but there is a marriage (12th August 1710) for Paschoe Hockin & Mary Lanyon, of Gulval. Is it possible there has been an error in recording the Parish Register. There appears to be no record of a marriage in IGI for a John Hockin and Mary in the right area and time period. Two marriages appear prior to 1720 but both appear to be in the far Eastern part of Cornwall. However there are two interesting burials at St Buryan:- 6th May 1752 - John Hocken 16th May 1776 - Mary Hocken, widow, aged 90 An earlier Pascoe Hockin married 'Audrye' at St Buryan in 1676. Don't know if this is of help but it is about the best I can do just for now. Need to start checking out some Wills and see what might be found.
