looking at the Milton family I am fairly convinced that the James who married Emma Smith was NOT James Woolcock Chappel. They never lived in Cornwall and didn't have a son Alfred. The one you want has to be the James who married first Jane then Mary and lived at Georgia. I dont know who the Emma Smith your mother-in-law mentioned might be. I am inclined to agree. Folk who married in Kent are unlikely to be the same family as the later Towednack ones unless there is additional evidence to show that these Kent folk relocated to Cornwall. While "James Chapple" might not be too uncommon, there would not be too many people with the full name "James Woolcock Chapple". George, the document I think you need right now is the birth/u] certificate for your Alfred Edward Chapple. That should settle the issue as to who his father was. If the birth certificate does not also state the mother's name, then I would also check for a christening record in case it names the mother as well. That should resolve things.

Hi Yes that is my thoughts. I am trying to sort out the Emma problem but in my mind I don't think that she is any thing to do with my father in law. But I cant help but wounder where my mother in law got the name Emma from as I have the marriage cert for a James Chappell and a Emma Smith who married at Milton Kent in 1867. This James Chappell father was William Chappell a laborer.
Alfred Edward Chappell married Elise Spencer ( my father in laws family) in 1920 and Alfred's father is down as James Edward Chappell
So I will get hold of birth cert to see who is down as Alfred's father then I can move on to the next problem Ha Ha
