I mentioned in a PM to Trencrom about the usefulness of a combination of documents from the 17th Century so thought I would give an example here based on Michell and Phillips of Zennor.
The documents in question are:-
1. A Church Rate of about 1613
2. The 1641 Protestation Returns
3. The 1662-64 Hearth Tax
If we work around these documents with surviving PR's and BT's and also Wills we should be able to form a reasonable picture.
Because both Michell and Phillips had some connections with Morvah and Towednack I have also had a quick scan of the latter two documents for those Parishes.
1641 Morvah - Henerye PHILIPS
1641 Towednack - Robert MICHEL
1662/4 Morvah - Nil
1662/4 Towednack - Nil
So now let us take a look at Zennor.
1613
Matthew PHILLEP
John PHILLEP
Thomas MYCHELL
1641
Robart MICHELL
James PHILLIP
Henry PHILLIP
Ralphe MICHELL
George MICHELL
Thomas PHILLIP
Israel MICHELL
James PHILLIP
John PHILLIP
James MICHELL
1662-64
Robert MITCHELL, jun
George MITCHELL
Cornelius PHILLIPS
Thomas PHILLIPS
Alice PHILLIPS
Francis PHILLIPS
Hearths not mentioned in the former Returns:-
Rob MICHELL & Anne PHILIPS & the occupants
** Because of their borders with Morvah I have decided to have a quick check of Gulval and Madron.
1641 Gulval
Edward MICHELL
John MICHELL
1662-64 Gulval
I believe my copy was provided by Zenobia who added a note saying there were NO PHILLIPS in that Parish at the time but there was a HENRY PHILLIPS at St Keverne.
1641 Madron
Lawrence MICCHELL
Willm MICCHELL
William MICHELL
1662-64 Madron
None Found
It would appear, then, that Gulval and Madron may be removed from the equation thus leaving us, basically, with Zennor to work on.
This gives us a 'skeleton' scenario for which, hopefully, surviving BDM's and Wills will enable us to create a 'body'.
The very interesting thing in the above is the highlighted HENRY PHILLIPS.
Were there TWO Henry Phillips
Or did the same man somehow manage to sign the Protestation in two different Parishes
There will be more on Henry to come.
