TREWHALL is actually TREWHELLA! Martin Trewhella was baptised at Ludgvan 3rd August 1862 son of Martin Trewhella and Maria Pope who married at St Erth, Cornwall, 28th January 1860. He was the fourth of six children to Martin and Maria with his three elder siblings all dying young. Martin and his younger brothers Matthew and John all went to the US albeit at different times. 1. Martin Trewhella Pope baptized 22nd August 1852 at Ludgvan son of Maria Pope of Polgrean, single woman (his name suggests Martin Trewhella was his father) - buried at Lelant 16th March 1853. 2. John Trewhella Pope baptized 28th March 1854 Halsetown (near St Ives) son of Maria Pope of Halse Town, single woman (again probably son of Martin) - buried at Ludgvan 27th November 1868 age 15. Martin Trewhella (28th July 1805 Towednack son of John Trewhella and Mary Berryman) married Maria Pope at St Erth 28th January 1860 3. Catherine Jane Trewhella baptized 5th March 1860 daughter of Martin and Maria Trewhella of Polgrean - buried at Ludgvan 15th September 1863 4. MARTIN Trewhella baptized 3rd August 1862 Ludgvan son of Martin and Maria Trewhella of Polgrean 5. Matthew Trewhella baptized 3rd April 1867 Ludgvan son of Martin and Maria Trewhella of Polgrean (born 27th February 1865 6. John Trewhella baptized 20th February 1870 Ludgvan son of Martin and Maria Trewhella of Polgrean (born 30th January 1869) Matthew (1867) married Bessie Trevaskis at St Erth, Cornwall, 29th October 1895 and had two children both born in the USA - Bernard Matthew James Trewhella born 3rd December 1900 Iron Mountain (MI) and Dorice Marion born 10th June 1903 Hibbing (MN). I would need to dig out some old notes to confirm this but Matthew Trewhella died at Hibbing in 1908 and his Bessie returned to Cornwall with the two children. Bessie married again at Lelant in 1910 to Clement Uren and was buried the following year at Lelant. Daughter Dorice married at Birmingham, West Midlands, in 1932 and died in Northamptonshire in 1993 but Bernard returned to the US and lived in Minnesota up to his death also in 1993. (I was fortunate enough to talk to Bernard when I was telephoning to make contact with Trewhellas in the US in the early 1990s) John (1869) married Agnes Jose at St Erth 17th December 1892 and had two known children in Cornwall before relocating to the US. Agnes died at Hibbing MN 26th March 1910 and John died at the State Hospital at Fergus Falls MN 19th October 1912. Death records suggest that another four children were born to John and Agnes but I have been unable to locate any records of their births and there is no record of any of them having survived infancy. Of the two children born in Cornwall only one survived:- Elizabeth Catherine Trewhella was born at Cockwells, Ludgvan, Cornwall 25th April 1893 and baptized in the Penzance Primitive Methodist Circuit 24th August 1893 - she died unmarried at Jordan MN 21st January 1980. Lena Alberta Trewhella was baptised at Gulval, Cornwall 30th June 1896 and buried at Gulval 4th July 1896 age just 1 month. CT

Martin was only married once and that was the marriage to Eliza Jane Jones nee Andrew.
I am not absolutely certain of his birth date. You quote 14th June 1861 from his headstone but the Death Certificate gives it as 13th June.

HI, I remember attempting to figure some of this out about 5 years ago. in the thread labelled "Martin Trewhella and Mary Champion". It looks like the link I inserted then no longer works, so here's a current one for the Internet Archive rather than the Google book. Martin's biography is on page 1117 which will be 288 of 480 as to the image numbers. I had attempted to link to Vol 3 of:Duluth and St. Louis County, Minnesota; their story and people; an authentic narrative of the past, with particular attention to the modern era in the commercial, industrial, educational, civic and social development by Van Brunt, Walter, 1846- Publication date 1921 I struggled with the family because I found them in an 1899 city directory for Marquette, Michigan, and the Jones children were listed as Trewhellas! The 1900 US Census has Eliza Jane as Jane L Trewhella in ST Louis County, Minnesota. I did not find the marriage of Eliza Andrew and John Jones, but they were at Lofthouse, Yorkshire, England with their first child George (birth registered 1870) in 1871. Next Eliza and 4 children: George, William, Laura, and Clara are found living with her mother Philippa(Scoble) Jones at Southwick, Durham, England in 1881. John Jones was likely in the USA. They had one more daughter, Mona, who was born in Michigan about 1882. According to the 1900 Census they arrived in 1881, so I haven't found them in 1880 USA, 1881 England and 1890 Michigan doesn't exist. From the City directory, Clara, Laura J, Martin (Jr) and Martin (timberman) plus Mona all Trewhellas resided at 311 N Maple Street. The girls were all actually "Jones" and I know nothing further about young Martin Trewhella. As a married woman, Eliza Jane was not mentioned. I believe she died in Itasca County, Minnesota in 1928, so either Martin went to California leaving the family back at home, or if Eliza went, she returned to Minnesota after he died. Zib I can upload clips of the images if anyone has trouble with the link
