We’re researching our family from St. Just and are trying to identify a particular Berryman from the 1700s.
Richard Berryman m. Elizabeth Ankervis (Nankervis) on 20 Apr 1760 in Zennor.
Elizabeth was from St. Just and we have no problems tracing her. However we have not been able to positively identify Richard Berryman, who was presumably from Zennor.
Elizabeth and Richard had one son Richard, baptized on 26 Jul 1760 in St. Just. Elizabeth died the following year and was buried in St. Just on 28 Nov 1761.
We do not know what subsequently became of the father Richard. So all that we really know about him is his name: Richard Berryman, that he probably came from Zennor or thereabouts, and that his son was named Richard.
We have identified two main possible candidates for him (but of course he may not be either):
1. Richard Berriman, baptized 16 Jan 1728 Zennor, son of John Berriman and Rebecca Berriman
2. Richard Berriman, baptized 11 Nov 1739 Towednack, son of Richard Berriman and Ann Eddy
Any help in identifying our Richard is greatly appreciated.

Although I am working towards commencing a complete review of the Berryman families I am fairly confident from earlier work that I have correctly identified Richard Berryman. One thing you need to be aware of is that although we have two predominent spellings of the name these days (i.e. with an 'i' or with a 'y') it was not quite the case in times past. Baptisms of children in a single family might have the name spelt in many different ways - Berryman, Berriman, Beriman, Beremen and so on. Bearing that in mind I have Richard as the following:-
son of Richd. and Ann Berriman baptised 11th November 1739 at Towednack
Richard appears to have not remarried but he does seem to have stayed at St Just. I believe this is his burial:-
St Just 26th August 1819 Richard Berryman of Brea Vean age 80

Thank you very much for that information CT.
We would be very much interested in the results your review of the Berryman families. Will it be made available through Penwith Genealogy when completed?

Always happy to help. I don't publish anything as a whole project and in fact don't publish anything at all given the propensity of people to take any little piece of information and pass it on as 'gospel' even thought that information might not be absolutely proven or supported by original sources. To me everything genealogy is an 'ongoing project' and many of my 'findings' are the result of a lot of hard work and research of whatever original material I can find. Where original sources are no longer extant or no longer readable I spend time trying to eliminate all conceivable possibilities. Depending on what resources might still be available even that process might take months (or longer) but it does help. Although I have spent a lot of time in the past working on the Berryman families it will probably take me, at the very least, many months to make any progress. I will be working with Parish Registers, Wills and other information that I did not have way back then so every database entry will need to be checked and updated. The best option for you is to simply post a query on a person or family of interest and I will do my best to find some answers for you if I don't already have them. Whatever answer I give will be based on available source records where possible but in the event those records are no longer available I will explain any conclusions. CT
