I have a lone child Anne BOSKENNING bap Gulval 18 Nov 1706 to John. They were from Madron. The generation that John belongs to seems to be missing, but prior to that the family is at Madron and Gulval 1625-1638 baptisms. Seems to have been a rather small localized family. Did they just appear and disappear within a few generations or did the name mutate?

Is it a case of one of these Cornish aliases? For example Boskenning appears to be a place name, often used as part of an alias, as in the reference to a 1689 will I found in the catalogue: Will of John Richards alias Boskenning, yeoman, of Madron Will, inventory.
Reference number AP/R/1311 Date 1689

I agree that the alias scenario is the likely solution. A search for five or ten years either side of the baptism of Anne for other baptisms with Boskenning as the als 'might' offer some clues but you may have to look at images of the actual registers rather than transcripts.
It is interesting to note that this name does not get a mention in Pawley-White's 'Handbook of Cornish Surnames' which also includes a list of surnames no longer in use.
