Hello there I had a few members of the CRAZE family crop up in my Quick and GLASSON families so I decided to do some work on those families in Penzance and St Ives area. Having done that now I believe that they came into this area from Redruth/Illogan or that general area. Before I go mad and try to find that link I would just like to check if there is a CRAZE expert out there. I think my oldest generation in St Ives is John Craze, 1759 - 1819 and husband of Jane James.

The earliest Craze I have in my database at the moment is John Craze who married Jane James at St Ives in 1786. John was recorded as a 'sojourner' in that record but I have not yet tried to trace him beyond that date. During the 1730s an Abraham Craze turns up at St Just in Penwith and thereafter there appears to be a family in that area for some time but prior to that Illogan and Camborne seems to be where they 'belonged'. CT PS - don't forget to look at CraSe and possibly Craize, Crayze etc. just in case.

Nice to hear from you. The name Abraham appears in the children of the John Craze you mention and I have followed all his children up to the 1900s or so. But I did ring fence St Just because they seemed to come direct from the Illogan / Redruth area and so I thought they could wait until later. Lots of Johns, Abrahams and Francis to follow so maybe not all that difficult. It certainly appears as if St Just was the beginning place for the St Ives / Penzance / Lelant families though. And before that probably Illogan via the mining business.
I agree with the spellling of Craze, it has proved a challenge especially with the census people.

And after a little hunting I agree that John Craze was baptized at St Just. CT

I have the parents of John Craze baptised 1760 St Just as John Craze, bap 1730, St Just and his wife Elizabeth Hall. Father of 1730 John Craze I have as Abraham Craze bap 12 Aug 1694 Illogan. It has been a very long time since I have looked at this line back this far.

Hello Jo and CT
Yes that is how I see it as well for the moment. I will finish the later families in St Ives / Penzance and then go back to John Craze, 1760, and go from there. A thought in the back of my mind though is that some on the 1800 Craze family in St Just were also from Illogan themselves so maybe more than one sub-branch in play here.

John and Elizabeth Craze appear to have had only three surviving children with one daughter Elizabeth surviving less than two years. The survivors were John, Abraham and another daughter named Elizabeth so to link John back to Abraham is logical. However, jumping to conclusions is never good so caution should be taken to make sure all possible persons named John Craze (var.) are considered and, where possible, removed from the equation. If every 'eligible' John Craze can be ruled out of the equation by marriage, burial or otherwise until only the son of Abraham remains then that is the probable answer. CT

Lannanta My connection to the Craze line is through Phillis Trewhella Michell who married Alfred Craze in 1897 at St Ives. I have Alfred's father as William Craze (m Elizabeth Ann Daniels 1851 St Ives). I have William's father as Francis Craze. He married Rebecca Honey in 1817. I have Francis as being baptised in 1792 in St Ives, the son of John Craze & Jane. Does this coincide with your findings?

Hello
Although I am yet to record Alfred Craze's mariage, I agree with the other information that you posted regarding his parentage etc.
