Hello CT et al,
Apologies, if this might be covered in other posts, I have spent a bit of time looking at the Hingston family of Towednack/Ludgvan as I am descended from John Hingston and his wife Honor Hamon. I recall comments on various websites regarding the use of the name Malachi coming into the Hingston and then the Trewhella families (through Katherine, daughter of John & Honor). I believe there is some (strong circumstantial) evidence this christian name originates from the Angwin family of St Just In Penwith.
After recently finding access to the Cornwall Probate Collection on Family Search, I have spent hours/days looking at various wills and believe that Baldwin Hingston (the First in Cornwall) married Temperance Angwin. A Temperance and Malachias Angwin are mentioned as siblings (with Julian) in their grandmother's will (Jane Angwin - AP/A/147) about 1625. The children's father being John Angwin and probably Elizabeth Holla. The will of Baldwin Angwin (the First), although being badly damaged refers to Malachias Angwin and he is also a witness to the will. It would appear he was a brother in law to Baldwin Hingston.
Also speaking of the Hingston family and Baldwin & Temperance's son John, who married Honor Hamon. I believe Honor is the daughter of the St Ives Merchant George Hammond and his wife Katherine (probably maiden name Praed). Although there are no baptism records for this period at St Ives, Towednack or Lelant, the children of John & Honor Hingston are named:
1. Temperance - named after John Hingston's mother
2. Baldwin - named after John's father
3. Katherine, baptised Nov 1671 at Ludgvan (“Katherine daughter to John Hinston baptised November..” )
4. George - no baptism found but noted on the website www-civ.eng.cam.ac.uk/cjb/hingston/hm.htm
5. Others, including Malachi, baptised 15 Mar 1683 (1684) at Towednack
Katherine Praed's mother was Honor Jenkins of St Columb Major.
Frustratingly the wills of Honor's grandparents do not name her as a grand child, i.e. James Praed of Trevethoe (PROB 11/217/586) and Edward Hammond (PROB 11/344/263), Merchant of St Ives. Her possible father George Hammond left no will, only an Administration Bond (AM/H/2543) - administered to his son Francis Hammond. A probably grand mother Ann Hammond (nee Hurley) also only had an Administration Bond, plus inventory and account.
I am interested if anyone has any comments on these thoughts.
Greg
