My great granddad was born in Ludgvan 1897, and was raised in the general region (Penzance and Marazion). His surname was Betty. His mother was a Berryman. When he moved to the States,he altered it to Beatty. He moved to America in December of 1914. I knew my great grand dad as child. It is actually him that stirred a longing to know where my ancestors came from. When I was 13 years old I wrote him a letter, as we lived states apart and I only saw him on summer vacations or holidays. In the letter I asked him questions about where he came from. He wrote me a lovely card, that painted a beautiful and poetic image of Cornwall. He died a week after I received that card, and I was grateful to have had that experience. He was 87. We have an image of his family, him as a young lad, taken right after his youngest brother and his mother died in 1901. By 1914 all but he, and his two sisters would be gone. The story of his two eldest brothers is heartbreaking. I am attaching this image.
The surnames in the Betty family starting around 1700s to 1900 are:
Eddy • Pengelly • Stevens/Stephens • Osborne • Carpenter • Richards • Tregurtha• Roberts • Thomas • Walker • Penhale • Mitchell
Berryman family also, for same time period:
Ralphe • Powley • Nichols • Tremellyn • Trewhella • Jasper • Roberts • Thomas • Banfield • Oliver • James • Bearle
I do have more surnames stretching into the 1600s with some branches. The first vicar of Gulval, Richard Veale is also, accounted as my 11th GG. His daughter Elizabeth Veale, married John Berryman. For years I was involved with research on the Veale family in Gloucestershire, and Tortworth, however, there is no direct proof who Richard's father was, and so it's a bit difficult finding out where they link up. I have no doubt he was from the line, but just not certain where.
I look forward to finding new clues, and helping out where I can. I live in California, so I am far from Cornwall, but a visit will occur someday.
Best ~ Melissa
