My interest in this thread started with the death of a Kathleen Quick in 1934 at Bodmin. I knew her to be the wife of Benedict Quick and therefore knew her to be Kathleen Duffy. However, the issue I had was in determining who Benedict Quick was. Eventually I traced him to be the Benedict Quick who was born at Queenstown in Cork on the 8th October 1897 and who eventually became a Gunner in the Royal Navy.
It is good that the Irish records are free online as Benedict Quick's birth is shown there and states that he was the son of Benedict Quick, a seaman (RN) and Mary Ellen Quick nee Barrett. It is then easy to find the birth of three children: the Benedict mentioned above, William Patrick and Mary Josephine. It is just as easy to find the marriage for the parents in 1892 but it is at this point that the information provided quickly becomes a puzzle.
Firstly, I was of the opinion that the Benedict Quick who married Mary Ellen Barrett was the son of Vivian Stevens Quick and Mary Quick nee Bottrell and who was born on the 2nd October 1869 in St Ives. Vivian died the following year which later on may be a factor in the dilemma.
Secondly, Benedict Quick, a seaman, the husband of Mary Ellen Barrett, died on the 21st January 1901 aged 31 years of heart disease.
The doubt that has been brought to my attention is that at his marriage to Mary Ellen Quick in 1892 it is recorded that Benedict Quick was the son of Benedict Quick (deceased) and not the Vivian Stevens Quick who I thought it should have said.
My questions are therefore... is the husband of Mary Ellen Barrett the son of Vivian Stevens Quick or have I got the wrong connection. Could the confusion be due to the fact that Vivian Stevens Quick died before his son Benedict was much more than six months old and therefore the son Benedict incorrectly assumed the name of his father was Benedict?
