I found your site while searching for birth/baptism records for John Ellis who married Elizabeth Penrose in 1733 in St.Just in Penwith. Google showed a thread on this subject so I have joined your group. My name is Michael Ellis from Melbourne,Australia and John Ellis is my 6x great-grandfather. My 2x great grandfather William Ellis (b1845) came to Australia in 1867 with his mother Honor (nee Curnow)wife of John Ellis (b1811). I am also a member of the Cornish Association of Victoria although I have had very little contact with the members. I look forward to making contact with the group to find more about my Cornish Ancestors from Sancreed and Boscaswell.

Hi Debs I have found your public tree on Ancestry.com. I have been using Ancestry public trees to create my family tree (also public) and then going about and finding records to confirm the copied information . When I joined this site I was contacted by White through Ancestry and he was very helpful in providing some very useful information on the Ellis family which sorted out the question regarding Elizabeth Penrose's husband John Ellis which I had wrong. Elizabth Penrose is my 6Xgreatgrandmother in the Ellis direct family line. As I mentioned in my introduction my 2X greatgrandfather a miner from Boscaswell, Cornwall emigrated to Australia in 1867. He was 21 years old unmarried and emigrated with his sister and mother. Do you have any family ancestors who also emigrated to Australia in the 1800s. Thanks for contacting me and look forward to hearing from you. Mike

Hi Mike Brill - have also received some very useful information form the same person I do have a Cornelius Ellis (my 4th Great Uncle, born Sennen 1837) who married Annie Hall in Victoria, Australia in 1868. Don't know much more about him at the moment, as have been concentrating on my Grandparent lines and 2 in particular are taking up substantial amounts of time! I'll have a root around and see if I can find some more records....maybe Cornelius and William traveled together! Debs

Ok - scrap that! Further research has revealed that I was wrong and Cornelius was the son of Richard and Nancy, not Richard and Ann! Ooops!

Um, Debs - that is not actually a problem. Nancy is a common nickname or variant for the name Ann/Anne.
In other words, Richard and Nancy are likely the same couple as Richard and Ann

Yep, thanks Gandolf - got there now! LOL! Ann/Nanny/Nancy - same person I should have checked in here 3 hours ago, may have saved me some confusion! I bet that our ancestors will curse us just as much due to our screen/FB names! So, as we were - Cornelius married in Victoria in 1868. Looks as though he may have left Cornwall in either 1850 (as an unaccompanied 13 year old?) or 1855. Debs

Debs - first of all I should welcome both you and Michael Ellis to the forum. The question of the arrival of Cornelius in Australia can probably be solved by checking the 1851 Census where you can find a 14-year-old Cornelius Ellis (birthplace Sennen) amongst a group of servants to Nicholas Pascoe at Skewjack in Sennen. The other servants include Richard Ellis age 23 and Francis Ellis age 18 - possibly brothers? That eliminates the possibility of Cornelius arriving in 1850. CT

Hi CT Thanks and of course, you are right - still leaves me with the problem of getting Cornelius to Australia, but I will continue to work on that, though there seems to be some conflicting information around about that! And I do believe that the 3 Ellis' were brothers, all working for the same employer. Thanks for the welcome - I am sure that I will have lots of questions over the coming months, as not long started, so please be patient Debs

Just take your time and try to build up a picture for yourself. Note down questions as you go and try to form a plan. Some of the questions you might find answers to yourself and you will come to a point where you will decide it is the right time to ask. Then just 'fire away' and I will see what I can do to help.
