Hi all,
I have struck a blockage in identifying the marriage (and therefore descendants) of Richard Roberts bp 1817, (baptism certificate sighted) in Kenwyn and Elizabeth Tonkin bp. either 1819, or 1824 in Kenwyn. (both certificates sighted).
Richard and Elizabeth were married on May 2nd 1844 in Kenwyn (I have sighted the original marriage certificate) and their ages were shown as 23 and 22 respectively which gives calculated birth dates of 1821 and 1822 respectively. If this is "my" Richard, he seems to have dropped his age by around 4 years, which makes me a little suspicious as to having the correct Richard, but the only Richard (var.) Roberts (var.) I can find a baptism for on OPC (including Non-conf) is the one baptised in 1817 to James Roberts and Elizabeth Rawling, m. 19 May 1804.
The problem with Elizabeth Tonkin, is that there were two, one bp. 1819 in Kenwyn, dau of John and Joanna Jory, living in Chacewater - and one bp. 1824 in Kenwyn, dau of John and Elizabeth Teague, living in Penstraze. At her marriage both her and Richard's residence was shown as Sevoack Water (now Saveock) which doesn't really help much as all three are within about 2 miles of each other. If Elizabeth was the daughter of Joanna, it doesn't help much with the name, because she appears to have had an older sister named Joanna. The baptism date of 1824 would appear to fit with the age on the marriage certificate of 22 (i.e. born c. 1822) but why would Richard's age have been so different. I'm forced to think that I must have the wrong Richard, but I can't find another one that fits.
Any Tonkins out there who could help?
P.S. If these are the Richard and Elizabeth shown in the 1861 census at Gwennap, they seem to have moved around a bit - two children born in St. Agnes, the next in Kenwyn and the last three in St. Day. Incidentally, while the ages are reasonable, Elizabeth states she was born in Kea, just to confuse things a little more, although that is next-door to Kenwyn. 1851 census show their ages as 29 and 30 which would mean birthdates of around 1822 and 1821 which is the same as the 1861 census.
P.P.S. - Unless, of course, there was a Richard baptised in 1817 and died a short time later and a subsequent son was named Richard in memoriam. However, I can't find a burial of a Richard between 1817 and 1825 and that would also need for the second son not to be baptised.
