Good afternoon,
I have joined as although my paternal ancestry is 75% Yorkshire and 25% Irish, my mother is rather more mixed. Thanks to the Maritime records going on line last year I was able to track William John Binnie back to a birth in Penzance, Cornwall in January 1807, making me 3.25% Cornish!
I read some of the posts and this seems to be a site composed of serious researchers.
I am retired and do some voluntary work for the Bedfordshire FHS at present.
Surnames I am currently researching are Gubbs, Harrison, Collett and Lanyon.
I have been unable to find any information on John Binnie senior and suspect he was another Mariner...
Kind Regards
David

Good afternoon, I have joined as although my paternal ancestry is 75% Yorkshire and 25% Irish, Well, as they say, "no one's perfect". But a big welcome to the Forum David, always nice to have new blood. I see you've already made some interesting posts. If I might ask a question up front - have you had a DNA test? Cheers Spike (from South Aust)

Cheers Spike (from South Aust) Good afternoon Spike, I have had an autosomal DNA test with family tree DNA, but don't really understand it, there seemed to be too many Spanish or South Americans within 6 generations. The actual DNA breakdown was 42% British Isles, 41% Central/Western Europe (France/Germany) , 5% Finland & N. Siberia (Scandinavia) , 4% Southern Europe (Spain, Italy, Greece) 3% Eastern Europe (Poland, Austria, Hungary, Ukraine) , 4% Asia Minor (Turkey) . I was anticipating a higher percentage of Scandinavian DNA, any assistance in understanding this would be welcome. As if it's worth doing I was thinking of asking my mother to do a mitochondrial one and an uncle to do a paternal one (if I can do so without offending them). Kind Regards David

Hi David, There's far more to be gained from DNA testing than just the Ethnicity Mix. That's something of a gimmick to get people to sign up for more tests or buy a sub. There are three DNA testing companies. They all have a different way of showing the Mix.I had mine done through Ancestry so I'm more familiar with that than FTDNA. We with Cornish Ancestors have our own set of problems with the results. Ancestry bundles us up as Ireland and some of us have no Irish ancestors. It's a Celtic thing.
Are you aware of the Gedmatch website? Results from any of the testing companies can be uploaded (for free) and they have a chromosome browser and several useful analytical tools for providing more info about you and your ancestors and others who might share those ancestors with you. Certainly worth looking at, imo.

I was totally unaware of Gedmatch and will search for it tomorrow. Many thanks for this information. Kind Regards David
