Hello, Cornwall.
I stumbled across this forum today while doing some research and was immediately struck by the name.
I now live in Western Australia, but I was born in South Australia. My ancestors were ROBERTS', TONKIN's, BLEWETT's, TIPPET's and CARTHEW's (and others) who emigrated from Cornwall in the 1840's 50's and 60's, mostly as miners to the "Copper Triangle" of Wallaroo, Kadina and Moonta as well as other copper mining areas such as Burra and Broken Hill. On the other side of the family, my ancestors came from Ayrshire. So I guess I am double-celtish.
I have recently taken an interest in (very) amateur genealogy and have discovered many of my ancestors who came from various parts of Cornwall. One of the problems I find is the commonality of names. It seems at times as if every second person in Cornwall had the surname Roberts. Add to that a rather prolific tendency towards producing offspring, and an annoying habit of naming all the children after their parents or grandparents generation after generation and it becomes a little like untangling a fishing line. There is a great temptation to throw it away and start again.
Some of the places I have identified as relevant are: St. Just in Penwith, Kenwyn, Penstraze Moors, Seveak Water, St. Enoder, Paul etc. Some of the records are a little ambiguous because of the connections between Parishes, villages and locations.
My 4th Great-grandfather, John Roberts (1807-1881) emigrated via Plymouth on the "Pakenham" on 16th Dec 1848 with his wife Ann (or Hanna or Anna) Roberts (nee Tonkin) and 6 children and arrived at Port Adelaide on 21st March 1849 from whence they seem to have immediately headed for Kooringa which is now the town of Burra.
John's son James (1832-1904) married Mary Jane Snell (1837-1866) who was born in Chacewater, the daughter of William Snell (1809-1863) and Mary Northey (1813-1892).
A couple of generations later, My 2nd G-grandfather, William John Roberts (1855-1927) married Eliza Jane Carthew (1856-1888) whose parents Zacharias Carthew (1825-1862) and Elizabeth Bastian (1828-1913) came from Redruth. Their son, Willie (Bill) Roberts (1881-1942) married Olive Blewett Tippet (1885-1976) whose parents, James Richard Tippett (1842-1909) and Eliza Jane Tippet (nee Blewett; later Johns) came from Crantock and St. Erth respectively.
I realize that if we go back far enough, I'm probably related to 50% of the population of Cornwall, but I have done a bit of work on the Aussie branch of the family and if any of the names above ring a bell with anybody, let me know and I will give you what information I may have. Always bearing in mind that the later generations took full advantage of Australia's multi-culturalism and there are Popolopolouses', Von Einem's, Tzadikis', Zimmermann's and all sorts in the mix by now.
I would love to hear from anyone who is interested in the South Australian connection to Cornwall.
Mike
