Hi there, I am a descendent of the Shugg family from St Ives - Henry Rowe Shugg who married Emma Jane Gorell - and will be visiting Cornwall in May and June this year so very soon, and wish to learn about the family whilst visiting. Any advice would be greatly appreciated such as museums, libraries, cemeteries relevant to the family history etc. that may be relevant. Thanks, Dianna.

St Ives Archive has quite a lot of information on the Shugg family. If you email them before you visit one of the volunteers will be able to show you round. Contact details are on the Archive website or Facebook page.

Welcome to the site Dianna. I reckoned on Londoner being able to help you with the Archive Centre information and in the meantime I have been in touch with Rowena who is our Shugg expert. She will get in touch with you via this forum soon and help you as best she can. CT

Hi Dianna,
With regard to the Shugg family of St. Ives, the men were all stone masons and builders, and various family members emigrated to Victoria, NSW, SA and New Zealand. Around St. Ives, there are a few places to be seen which were reputedly built by them, although I don't have information on who was engaged with building what. This information was provided to me by another Shugg researcher who visited Cornwall some years ago from Australia, and I think he was probably directed by a local family history society. I can't personally verify what I am about to provide you with. I can provide the Shugg researcher's contact details if you want to PM me, also my email if you want to discuss your research. It's a very big family and I don't know how much you are interested in.
Around St. Ives the Shugg family built many (if not all) of the houses in Street An Garrow, the stone wall dividing Marakov Street, the Stennet (I don't know if this is the stone walling or the houses, or both, judging by the age of the houses), Westcote Quay pier, and the building on the foreshore known as Brig Y Don at Wharf Road, in St Ives, in more recent times housing restaurants, bakery's etc. A google search may show more recent photos. There may well be more. I was given some images from the fellow's trip and am happy to send them to you.
Some Shugg folk are buried at Barnoon Cemetery, which overlooks Carbis Bay at St. Ives. These are more recent burials. Sadly, there are very few headstones for Shugg folk surviving. The Shugg families were mainly spread through West Cornwall, coming from the Gwinear parish area, then St Ives, Cambourne, Phillack, Helston, and Sithney. Originally they appear to have been farm labourers and miners, and later engaged with building and seafaring as well.
Looking forward to hearing from you, Kind regards, Rowena

A few amendments to what Rowena said, today maps show the Malkoff (named for a Boer War battle I think) and the Stennack, after the river of the same name derived from its tin mining connection. Barnoon Cemetery is above Porthmeor Beach, known for its surfing, and the Tate Gallery. The Cornish Camborne is spelled without the u the other one is in Cambridgeshire. Hope you don't mind me adding these, Rowena, but it is easy to get mixed up with Cornish place names.
