Hi Again, Hope I'm in the right board for this question.
Trying to find some extra info on this William Curnow born to Sampson Curnow & Hannah Rapson.
There may be a connection in marriage to an Amelia Curnow born about 1864 (died 1935) to a Jacob Curnow & Mary Fill, except I can't find the actual marriage place or date. If this is the correct couple they have a first son William James born in USA 1885, however they all seem to be back in Cornwall in the 1891 census.
Would like to know if I'm on the right track.
Thanks for any help.

Try South Dakota for the marriage, it's 1894, not long before the first child. Many, many of the Sampson Curnow~Hannah Rapson descendants went there, establishing quite a large clan. As you say, William & Amelia however returned to Cornwall, and are buried at Towednack. If you look at 1901/1911, you will see that they also gave South Africa a go..... Sue

Hi Sue, I did look for South Dakota Marriages on Family Search but it didn't show up. Unfortunately, although I'm a member on Ancestry I can't see any USA records either so a lot is guesswork for me.

To the above. Hannah Rapson , married Samson Curnow . I am descended from Hannah's sister Jane who married Thomas Nance. I know Hannah and Samson had a daughter Kate who married a Trewhell and had two sons John and Martin.

Unfortunately FamilySearch and Ancestry are both devoid of South Dakota Vital Records prior to around 1905 so it is no wonder you can't find that marriage. And I have to admit that even though I have the details I am also unable to find the actual record online. What should be the most likely source would be SDGenWeb but the links that I would have thought should lead me to the information all seem to be broken. Perhap it might be an idea if Sue were to 'let out a secret or two' in this case. A slight correction to the above is that Birth Records for South Dakota that are more than 100 years old can be accessed via the South Dakota Department of Health website. doh.sd.gov/Start with the 'CERTIFICATES & RECORDS' button and navigate your way via 'Genealogy Resources' then read down the page to 'Birth Records' and you will find a link for 'online' under 'Access to Birth Records'. I have started you from the Home Page just so that you can see what the site has to offer. Most of it probably won't be of much use to you but it is worth having a look through the site anyway. But we still need Sue's help for the marriages! CT

When I replied "Try South Dakota for the marriage, it's 1894, not long before the first child", I was kindof hoping that someone would then find it in online records, on some site.... because over the years I have found that every now and then I find some access to South Dakota vital records, then the link gets broken, the site disappears, or gets a makeover that includes disappearing just the things that I need! Which is what had happened yet again when I tried in vain to find early Deadwood South Dakota events in response to this query. One of my own Curnow line married in Lead South Dakota 23 August 1889, I can clearly remember the moment of the actual find some 5/6 years ago on a South Dakota website because it was a breakthrough, but it is one of those websites that has changed out of all recognition & I can no longer find the information. And I believe the link is now broken into the bargain... (My notes say I found this 1889 marriage via a newspaper search on the SD Archives website. As far as I can see, the re-vamp of that website has removed the ability to search the newspapers.... and the Chronicling America newspaper website doesn't yield up any Curnows to me in South Dakota newspapers, pre 1900.) This is an example of a website that in a previous incarnation yielded up some useful information; maybe it's me, but I can no longer find as much as I once could, except naturalisation... history.sd.gov/Archives/Data/Naturalization/FirstPapersSearch.aspxThere's also this, which again, hasn't found me much I really want usgwarchives.net/sd/lawrence/lawrence.htmlSo, for Wm Curnow~Amelia Curnow marriage, all I can currently provide is hearsay, which I do not agree with spreading around, that's how erroneous family history information spreads like a virus! So I shall whisper " 14 Jun 1884 Deadwood S Dakota ", on the promise that no-one puts that out there on an internet tree! Sue

I did not pick up on this yesterday but I do think you might have made a typo here! I think you mean 1884 not 1894. And now I can empathise with you because I have been having exactly the same problems. And I had the same date for the 1884 marriage as yourself only I had a different 'word of mouth'/email/letter type source. I have not been able to verify the information withy any reliable recorded source as yet. CT
