West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser 31 January 1887, Monday
Affiliation - Thomas PHILLIPS, stone-cutter, Truro, was summoned by Elizabeth GLASSON to show cause why he should not contribute towards the maintenance of her illegitimate child, of which she alleged him to be the father. The Bench made an order of 3s. a week for 16 years, and costs.
Not a great deal of information I know, but some of my Phillips were in Truro at that time.
Who was Elizabeth and did she name the child Glasson or Phillips?

My guess is that she was the daughter of Samuel Glasson (the Ferret) and Elizabeth nee Tucker. The younger Elizabeth was born around 1869 in Truro and had three illegitimate children before marrying James Newcombe at the Wesleyan Chapel in Truro in 1898. Those three illegitimate Glasson children were Mary Ann (1886), Louisa (1890 - 1890) and Lillian 1893.

Di - once again I need to ask just what steps you have taken to try and answer your own question? I suspect the answer might be that you have not taken any except to post this query?? I reckon it has taken me about two minutes to find a possible answer! I cannot guarantee that it is the right answer but what I have found in those couple of minutes does fit the information you have given. In the hope that you might learn something to help you in future I will explain what I did and what I found. My first consideration was the possibility that Elizabeth Glasson and Thomas Phillips might have married so I did a quick check of FreeBMD for any Elizabeth Glassons marrying during the years 1887-1891. The reason for that is that if there is no marriage then there might be a chance of finding Elizabeth in the 1891 Census. There was one marriage in the Redruth area and another in Devon so it appears Elizabeth remained single. Next thing is to check whether Elizabeth might have died so another check of FreeBMD was done. There was just one Elizabeth Glasson of child-bearing age who died during that period and she was Elizabeth M A Glasson in the Redruth area. With Elizabeth apparently surviving until 1891 unmarried I checked the 1891 Census. I was looking for any Elizabeth Glasson probably living in the Truro area who was unmarried and who would have been born no earlier than 1839 and no later than 1872. That allowed for her to be no more than age 48 and no less than age 14 in 1886 when the child was presumably born although more than likely she would have been somewhere between about 17 and 30. (I should add that the Elizabeth I was looking for would need to have a child of about age 4 living in the house!) The end result is the following entry:- 1891 Census - Kenwyn Keel Alley Elizabeth GLASSON, head, widow, age 60, charwoman, born Lanreath, Cornwall Mary A GLASSON, daughter, single, age 29, charwoman, born Truro Elizabeth GLASSON, daughter, single, age 22, charwoman, born Truro Mary A GLASSON, granddaughter, age 4, born TruroWith two unmarried daughters in the house it is possible that the granddaughter might belong to either of them. But there is also the possibility that Elizabeth Glasson senior might have had a son and that the grandaughter was a daughter of that son! This 'looks like' the answer to your question but you still need to consider there may have been another Elizabeth Glasson involved and that she may have left England before the 1891 Census. And it is also possible that there may have been another Elizabeth Glasson but the child was fostered out. You need to try and find what happened to the above family after 1891 in order to determine if this is indeed the Elizabeth involved with Thomas Phillips. Whatever you manage to find out as a result of this it may still not help you with the Phillips family unless Elizabeth Glasson and Thomas Phillips ultimately married! As I said at the top, finding this entry took about two minutes and was not difficult at all! CT

Hi CT,
Not on topic, but is there any reason that Lannanta is showing as a deleted member?
