Looking for any trace of Sampson Tamblyn who was married to Mary (May) Curnow. She was born in 1809 and died 10 December 1889 in St. Ives. I find a Sampson Tamblyn family in St. Agnes, but don't know if this is the same Sampson with a first family or a different person. Mary Curnow Tamblyn shows up in several different households on the census and I don't find much trace of her husband and she is listed a widow in 1871. I don't know if Sampson and Mary had any children, but I'm thinking that they didn't. I cannot find a marriage for these two or a death for Sampson. Thanks so much! Steven Belanger Davenport, FL

Unfortunately I have had the same problems with no trace of Sampson Tamblyn at all. I have it recorded that he was a tin miner but for the life of me I don't know where that information came from given I cannot find him in the Census! The only thing I do know is that Sampson and Mary were married in the June Qtr of 1847 Penzance Registration District. There appears to be no record of the marriage in the West Briton and it is certainly not in the Parish Registers that I have access to so I would expect it took place most likely in the Registry Office.

Thanks CT! Their marriage record just might be worth ordering then. At least it should list his father. Steve

I ordered the marriage record. I'm guessing that they married at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, which is where Mary's brother Peter married that same year. According to the Curnow Family story I have (written 80 years ago), Sampson was a smuggler, which might explain why he was always absent in the census. I'll post again once I get it.

And I think I just found the answer to what happened to him, according to the England and Wales National Probate Register, Sampson Tamblyn died near Weston, Illinois in the US on September 23, 1863 and his effects and estate were settled to his widow Mary Tamblyn of St. Ives.

That is excellent - and it now suggests it might be a very good possibility that Sampson was the one baptized at St Agnes 26th January 1806 to William and Mary Tamblin. Thankyou for the information. CT

I now find Sampson in Jo Daviess County, Illinois in 1860. In the same county, but different town, is another Tamblyn family from England. An Elizabeth, b.1799, and possibly four children, Thomas, James, Richard and Mary, ranging in ages from 20-33. Sampson's age in 1860 is 53 so this also supports the baptism you've found.

I see there is a complementary snippet re Sampson's death in an online transcription of Newspaper Articles from Jo Daviess County: "THE GALENA DAILY GAZETTE Vol. 16...........7 Jan. 1864 ....................... PROBATE NOTICE: " Estate of Sampson TAMBLYN Admin. Richard TRIDINNICK dated 2nd day of Dec., A.D. 1863" And an Ann Tamblyn married Richard Tredinnick 19 May 1836 St Agnes, with a witness William Tamblyn, which I rather think would make Ann the 1808 daughter of William & Mary, so Richard Tridinnick administrator of probate was Sampson's brother-in-law..... And now we are getting somewhere! You will also find that Sampson's father William married twice with both wives being named Mary. The marriages were 1793 and 1798 at St Agnes with details on the OPC site. CT

After checking the St Agnes Parish register and comparing signiatures I can confirm that Ann was the sister of Sampson. Although the signiature of William Tamblyn (witness) is a little shaky he is unmistakably the same William who married Mary Nettle in 1793 and Mary Pearce in 1797.
