Hi jjw - nice to hear from you again. First point I need to make is that it is unwise to supply details of login details and passwords in any open forum. I think it would be a smart move if you were to edit your post and remove that information. On William Tamlin - I have just tried a little Devon searching but the only William Tamlins (var.) I can find are all born too early or too late to be a match for your man. The only Devon information I have ready access to is on FamilySearch but their available online collection is limited and does not cover all of the County. And in fact for the Parishes that are covered that coverage is far from complete. Perhaps if you could post some details of your tree on this forum it might catch the attention of other members who may be able to offer some help. Just a few facts about what you have found about William Tamblin, possible parents of siblings and connections to the Galsworthy family might help. CT

Well I have found some really good news! William Tamlin is in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan for sure 1903 to 1910 and he is in the 1910 US Census and he died that year as well on 26 Nov 1910. He is buried in Woodmere Cemetery, Detroit in Section E Blk 16 Grave 240. The death certificate gives no good information and is in error stating his birth was 1825. The 1910 US Census indicates he immigrated to the USA in 1848--from England or from Canada?
There are other Tamlin's in Detroit at that time as per the Detroit City Directories. Some younger ones (a baker) went back to nearby Canadian villages/towns like London, Ontario. Some were pipe fitters. Some older Tamlin's were harness makes and carpenters---My William in his first City Directory in Dubuque, Iowa lists his occupation as "carpenter." "Harness Maker" seems like an old world occupation and maybe represents his father William Tamlin? My William could have been in Detroit in the mid 1890's as there are Tamlin's/Tomlin's listed then as well in City Directories.
Why would a person age abt 65 go to Detroit after spending almost 40 years in Dubuque, Iowa? Did he have sick parents there? Relatives there? Did he inherited some property there. He went there by himself --not as if he was moving his family there or had to relocate due to being transferred (as a waiter?). Was he in legal trouble for not paying alimony in Dubuque or for not paying his legal bills ---that would have been around 1865 and surely would have been resolved in 35-40 years there. I propose William returned to Detroit due to relatives being there. He may have lived there 1848 to abt 1855 before going to Dubuque, Iowa. I have not found his immigration record or any Canadian Border Crossing records for my William. As before, I do not know the names of his parents, the names of any siblings (if any) or where in England he originated from. Your help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Jim

William Tamlin abandoned Harriett "Hattie" Morris and their son Albert Morris Tamlin and eventually had to be divorced by Hattie and then did not pay alimony and was taken to court again --then later his lawyer took him to court for non payment of his bill.
So if he had no problem abandoning a wife and child in 1865 maybe he had no problem doing that around 1848-1854 when living in Canada? or Detroit? Just a thought. Jim

There is still a lot of conflicting information involved here which is making it really difficult. But I have noticed/checked a couple of things. 1. the 1910 Death Certificate for William Tamlin in Detroit states he was age 90 (thus born about 1820) and it also states that he was 'married'!! His year of immigration also is 1849 and not 1848. 2. John Isaac - I have just had a look at the 1861 Canadian Census and can tell you that 'Isaac' is a surname which can be found in England. He could have been a relative or possibly a servant. If the family in 1861 is indeed your family then from the information included it seems likely that you might be looking at one family - Charles Tamlin and his wife along with William and Jane Tamlin who are possibly brother and sister to Charles. I cannot find any likely family with these siblings in the 1841 UK Census. Before I continue I should point out that the name 'Tamlin' has some variations. Generally, particularly in earlier records, the variations are interchangeable and often dependent on the person hearing the name and writing the record. And it is not unusual for members of the same family to eventually adopt different spellings of their surname - something that has happened in parts of my own family. The variations are mostly TAMBLYN, TAMBLIN, TAMLYN, TAMLIN and often you might see an 'e' added (e.g. Tamblyne). You might also find variations such as 'Tamelin'. Now, it could be that there are two different Charles involved but I have just found a few things for you to take into consideration. As William is a more common name I decided to try a blanket search on the name 'charles tamlin'. There was a Charles Richards TAMBLYN baptised at St Ives, Cornwall, 14th April 1815 and this Charles was at Clarke, Durham County, Canada West (Ontario) in the 1851 Canadian Census along with wife Elizabeth and a number of children. Here is the link to that Census:- www.ancestry.com.au/imageviewer/collections/1061/images/e094-e002346297?treeid=&personid=&rc=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=lSC38520&_phstart=successSource&pId=1173956Charles Richards Tamblyn died at Orono, Durham County, Ontario in 1885 as per the following Findagrave record:- www.ancestry.com.au/discoveryui-content/view/4187266:60527?tid=&pid=&queryId=d7542d6ea7804d3267451b8df940ac44&_phsrc=lSC38521&_phstart=successSourceAHA - I now see that this is definitely a different Charles as he is still with wife Elizabeth in the 1881 Canadian Census. Never mind - the point is that you may need to expand your searches in an effort to weed out conflicting information and narrow the search for your William. I will try and check a few more things but by focussing on Charles you might have a better chance of identifying William. CT

There is very little information in the Death Certificate and what is there is not 100% Correct. I doubt he was born in 1820 or 1825. Almost every record I have for him indicates he was born about 1830 if not in 1830. He was married and divorced. So at one time he WAS married. I kind of doubt he was married at the time of his death but will check it out. Sorry about the typo of his immigration date!

Originally there was another respondent to my inquiries about William Tamlin beside Cornish Terrier. Who was that? I would like to correspond with that person again.

CT I do have the divorce records for Harriet Hattie Morris Tamlin vs William Tamlin, Dubuque County, Iowa, USA. He did not show up for the first hearing. The second hearing was due to his failure to pay alimony. A third court action was taken vs William Tamlin for failure to pay his bill for legal fees. There was no mention of his place of birth, names of parents, names of siblings, or places of former residence, immigration dates, etc.

I have been having a look through the 1841 UK Census and while I cannot find a link to Charles Tamlyn at the moment I have found something else that 'might' (and I stress 'might') be of some use. Although the apparently unmarried William and Jane Tamlyn were with Charles and his wife in 1861 it is possible that Charles might have been a cousin or even possibly an uncle rather than a brother.
Anyway, about the nearest possible family I can locate in the 1841 UK Census that roughly fits the 1861 profile of William and Jane is this one:-
1841 Devon Parish of Marwood John Tamlyn age 35 ag lab born Devon Grace Tamlyn age 35 born Devon William Tamlyn age 8 born Devon Jane Tamlyn age 6 born Devon John Tamlyn age 3 born Devon

Found! Found that William Tamlin moved back to Detroit, Wayne, Michigan after he left Dubuque, Iowa. He is in the 1896 Detroit City Directory at 86 Grand River Ave. He is in other Detroit City Directories up to 1910. He is in the 1910 US Census for Detroit at 227 2nd Ave. He died in Detroit in 1910 and is buried in Woodmere Cemetery there. I have his Michigan Death Certificate which is void of a lot of information I need. The 1910 US Census indicates he immigrated to the USA in 1849. I am assuming he immigrated to Detroit possibly from Western Ontario Canada and that he has/had relatives in Western Ontario, Canada and Detroit. There are other Tamlin's in these areas. Now I have to try to determine if my William is related to any of them. I still do not know where in England he was born. The 1910 US Census indicates he was born in 1825 which is 5 years earlier than I have seen in other documents. I do not know the names of his parents or siblings (if any). I have not found an Immigration record for him for England to Canada or to the USA. I am waiting for Woodmere Cemetery to indicate to me who purchased the gravesite for my William Tamlin. He is buried alone and my friend "Lindy" recently posted this information to Find A Grave since it was not there earlier. Help!

Re: the Tamlin family in Ontario, I think that William can be ruled out. www.findagrave.com/memorial/224418776/william-tamlin Age at death gives him a year of birth of about 1824. In 1851, Siblings Charles, William and Jane are listed with their mother, Joanna (maiden name Thorne) and their nephew, John Isaac who was the son of sister Elizabeth and her husband Emanuel Isaac. They were married in Swimbridge, Devon in 1842. Joanna was the 1783 daughter of Thomas Thorne Jr and Mary Nott baptized in Swimbridge. When she married William Tamlin in 1810, he gave his place of residence as Chittlehampton. William Tamlin married Elizabeth Jane Tackabury in 1866 in Ontario. I don't know if that was his first marriage or not. Jane Tamlin married Elizabeth Jane's brother, Nathaniel. I haven't found whether William Sr also went to Canada or if he died in England. Zib
