I have just noticed what appears to be yet another of those Cornish chaps that disappear off into the US and never return to the wife in England..... I have Isaac Curnow born Mar Q 1860 Towednack to Jacob & Mary, so descended from Thomas Curnow~Honor Michell, marrying Honor Oats Mar Q 1885 Penzance RD. Son Isaac John Curnow is born Mar Q 1886 and I expect Isaac Curnow born & died Mar Q 1885 is also theirs. Honor & son Isaac are at Amalebry 1891 but no husband; Honor re-marries Sep Q 1897 to William Trewhella. Over in the US, 1900 has an Isaac Carnow age 40 born February 1860 England naturalised American, mining in Utah, declared as single and having immigrated in 1884. 1910 again single in Utah, this time age 52. There is then a death of apoplexy Christmas Day 1914 Salt Lake of a married Ike Curnow, age approximated at 58 but no family details known. So, another case of abandonment, no matter the legal formalities, methinks! Sue

Most interesting! I don't believe I had ever found what happened to Honor's previous husband so when I get some free time later today I will follow the trail you have indicated and see what other clues might be found. CT

His son, Isaac John Curnow married Chritiana Lutey, 22mar 1911 at Towednack. On the 1911 census her birth given as USA. I can supply details of Honor Oates ancestry if wanted. RW

Sue - I am not quite so sure that this is correct. Also in March 1860 is the death of an Isaac Curnow which I suspect to be that same child. Isaac son of Jacob and Mary was certainly born around 1860/1861 if Census and other information is correct but I think perhaps his birth is not in the index or his name may be mis-spelt. Besides - Isaac had a sister Amelia buried at Towednack in 1861 and I believe her birth is the one registered in the December Qtr of 1859. That would make Isaac's birth in March Qtr 1860 very tight indeed! More ...... if I find it! CT

Roy - that is correct. Isaac appeared in the 1871 Census aged 7 but in 1881 his age was recorded as 20. I have not been able to find a birth registration for him and he disappears after the baptism of son Isaac John in 1886.

And if you read that particular record diligently it will be noted that the date of death was indeed December 25th, 1914 - but you will find that Ike was buried 10 months earlier on February 14th, 1914! ;D However - there is another collection on FS called 'Utah Death Certificates, 1904-1956' and there you will find the Death Certificate for Ike which states that he died on December 26th, 1913. He was to be buried at Salt Lake 'on arrival'. So if he died on December 26th 1913 why did it take until February 14th 1914 for him to turn up for burial?? CT

I must say I have struggled with the FBMD Isaac Curnow entries in the 1850 to 1865 period! Twin Isaac 1823 Towednack died 1825; his brother 1833 survived & is present 1841/51 & I have a note perhaps died 1859 Victoria Aus..... Their brother Jacob 1823 & wife Mary Fill have an Isaac at home 1871 “7” 1881 “20” who marries Honor Oats & I believe disappears off to Utah – indeed he is not at home 1861, indicating a late 1861 birth. (Yes Isaac was baptized 26 September 1864 same day as younger sister Amelia; but then his older brothers William & Alfred were baptized later still, 3 October 1865! : CT is of course right that the Isaac Curnow Mar Q 1860 birth probably matches the Mar Q 1860 death ( & on reflection would fit nicely into belonging to Jacob's brother Thomas, who lost quite a few young children); and there's another possible matching pair of Birth Dec Q 1855 & Death Dec Q 1856. So leaving on one side the missing-for-now-in-FBMD 1861 birth for Honor's husband Isaac, there is an Isaac Curnow death Sep Q 1860.... is my note mistaken that Isaac 1833 perhaps died in Aus 1859? As to the Christmas Day death of Ike Curnow in Utah 1913/14: Well could be there was a post mortem/inquest, I think that was a possibility in 1913/14. After all, the death certificate signed by Doctor “N B Niedin” 28 Dec 1913 in Bingham states cause of death apoplexy, died suddenly, contributory reason(s) not known, registrar signing the death certificate is a “DW George”; yet a 2nd variant death certificate is created on the date of burial 14 February 1914, this time Dr E F Straup of Bingham certifies the cause of death, and a different registrar produces the certificate. I think it is possible suspicious circumstances may have been considered... Sue

Sue - Isaac Roach Curnow died in Victoria in 1859 age 25. He was privately baptised as 'Isaac Curnow' 17th January 1833 and then publicly as 'Isaac Roach Curnow' 7th July 1833. That means the September Qtr 1860 death is most likely the child born in the March Qtr of that same year. Don't worry too much about missing FreeBMD entries. I have been working on the Hollow/Holla families for a couple of weeks and I reckon that I have managed to find only about 50% of the blighters in FreeBMD!! I had not seen the second death certificate for Ike in Utah so I will have to check it out. CT
