Hi Guys, I'm new!! My name is Toban (but you can call me Baz ). I have been working on my family tree for over a year now but only just started looking into my Cornish ancestors - which confused me in the past!! I have a death certificate for Elizabeth Richards (née Mitchell) who originated from Zennor (though the cert says she was born in Devon!) whos parents were Samuel Mitchell & Elizabeth Laurie (who I cannot find). So I figured that the informant for the cert (her son-in-law) got her parents wrong, like her birth place. I am now thinking she was either the daughter of Samuel & Mary Trewhella (m. 1796, Towednack) or Samuel & Mary Phillips (m. 1804, Perranzabuloe). She married John Richards in 1827, Zennor, and I have the census returns for 1841 & '51. They, with their 9 daughters, immigrated to Australia in 1854. Thats my problems out of the way, so I hope you can help. Looking forward to meeting you all and knocking down some brick walls ;D Bazza

Hi Baz and welcome to the forum.
As you know, the information on a death cert is only as good as the knoiwledge of the informant, so it is possible as you say that the son in law was mistaken as to some of the particulars.
A couple of questions based on what information you have provided:
Did Elizabeth leave a will naming any siblings?
Did anyone else come out to Australia and die with the same couple named as parents? (death indexes may reveal that) i.e. are there any known siblings of Elizabeth whose own records could then be pursued to see who were named as the parents of the same?
What does the 41 and 51 censuses say about Elizabeth's age and birthplace?
Who were the witnesses to the wedding in 1827? Do these witnesses appear as witnesses to any other Michell weddings either in or around Zennor in that same period of time?
What were the names of John and Elizabeth's children? How do the names of their children compare with those of 1. Samuel & Mary Trewhella 2. Samuel & Mary Phillips
Did the possible candidates for her parents leave any wills/admons identifying any Richards relations?

G'day Bazza - and welcome from me also. Have had a read of your note and done some checking through my database. I can tell you that, although not totally checked by myself, that I had information supplied some years ago about part of this. It is my belief that Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel MICHELL and Mary TREWHELLA who married at Zennor 17th March 1827. I have found the relevant details in the 1851 Census and also checked what information I have available for Zennor. In 1851 we find all nine daughters that you have mentioned. Elizabeth's birthplace is given as Zennor. John's birthplace is given as Madron. The first three daughters were born Lelant and I have found their baptisms in the Lelant Online Parish Register. Then we have five daughters born at Zennor for whom I have found baptisms for the last two. The last daughter was born at St Ives but I do not have that information available at the moment. ( But I also found that John and Elizabeth had a son, John, baptised at Zennor 10th May 1846. I can only presume, at the moment, that he died and was buried at St Ives where his younger sister was born. My next step was to check the Australian BDM records for Victoria. I found the following:- Grace Mitchell Richards m. William Grange Heazelwood in 1864 Have had no luck, so far, in finding the rest of the family and could also not find much more on William and Grace. There were some children born to them in Victoria but I have not noted them just now. It would appear that the family 'may' have moved to another State, or even elsewhere, but I cannot be certain of that. Hope this helps. I also suggest that we have this discussion moved to another section of the Board - probably Zennor Zearchings. Ian

Bazza - forgot to ask. Could you supply the details of the Death Certificate and also details about the son-in-law, which daughter he married, when and where. Also, anything else you may have that could help me track down this little group. Ian

Hi Guys, and thanks for your responses.
I will create a new post in Zennor Zearching as suggested which will list the details asked for and anything else relevant. Unfortunately I have not been able to locate a will for any of these people in Victoria.
See new post for more info...
