Hi - I also bumped into this website via google. I can track back to my great-great-grandfather Henry Glasson (1828-1906). My great grandfather was one of his sons, Herbert Arundel Glasson and this is also the name of one of my great-uncles. Old GGG Henry Glasson seems to have had lots of children, first in NZ and then in Australia - several are called Herbert Arundel or Hubert Arondel Glasson. I can remember my great-aunts and -uncles quite well. This website looks to be very helpful - Briar Glasson in Auckland, we're probably related. i'd be interested to share who might be our common relatives.

Hi Sue, i don't have any Glassons amongst my lot, but wondered if the Arundel part of you ancestor's name held any references to any earlier connections to the Arudel family of Penbigell and Trerise? The earliest connection with the Arundel's that i have in y own line is the marriage of Alice KEMYELL (grandaughter of the Arudell family) to Ralph VYVIAN Esq in the late 14th C, and then about a century later, one Florence Arundell of Trerise brought the family estates into the hands of one Ralph VYVIAN of Trevdren, Buryan upon their marriage. Ralph was referred to as a courtier and died on 7th Aug 1518. If the Arundell in your forefathers' name is a reference to any connection I would be happy to give you what details i have for the period, although those are the only two connections that i have established. Good luck hunting, and welcome! Ted Carpenter

Hello Susan and welcome to Penwith Genealogy. If you look down the Homepage you will see that we have a section for Glasson under the Surnames of General Interest banner. I think there is already some discussion there about this family so post a note there and Lannanta I am sure will be the first to get involved. CT

Hi Ted
The Arundle name comes from the father of Lucy Lewis - Henry Glasson's wife. Her father was Thomas Arundle Lewis and he is one of at least twelve children - none of the others using the name Arundle. His marriage is as follows:

Hi Susan
If I can help please ask - I have seen most of the graves at Avonside Parish that you mention.... still there after the earthquake I believe even with its close proximity to the Avon River and the extensive liquefaction issues.

Thank you so much for your help Lannanta. That link you have made from Lucy Glasson to the "Arundel" connection is exciting new information to me. I see that Lucy's parents were married in London. Do you think that she's not from Cornish origins then?
Thank you also of your offer of information from the Avonside Parish. I'm very pleased to hear that it's still there! I have some letters from my great-grandmother Margaretta Jeannie Glasson (nee Dix) when she lived in Avonside. Is she buried there? Are there others from the Dix or Calder families documented in the Parish?
many thanks again.

Hi Sue,
I believe Lucy Glasson nee Lewis was born in Northchapel, Sussex in 1836.
Her father Thomas A. Lewis is listed in the census as being born in London, although I have seen records stating he was Welsh (?). Perhaps Lannanta or CT can confirm which is correct. I also have an unconfirmed note saying he had lost an arm during his Navy Service. Her mother Emma Gardner was born in Oxfordshire.
Best wishes, Carole

Hello Susan
While it is true that husband Herbert Arundle Glasson is buried at Avonside, I do believe that Margaretta was buried at the Ruru Lawn Cemetery in Bromley, Christchurch, on the 26th April 1954.

Hello again Susan
I agree with Sue with respect to the County - I have it recorded that Lucy Lewis was born on the 19th April 1836 at Chiddingford in Surrey.
I also believe that her father was baptised at Westminster in London but I cannot confirm that or his place of birth.

Hi Susan Yes we must be related as The Rev (Henry Glasson) was my GGGrandfather and his son Herbert Arundel Glasson my GGrandfather. My grandfather was Launcelot Noel Glasson, second son of Herbert and Greta (nee Dix) Glasson. I have the Glasson family tree which I am hoping you also have. Have B,D & marriage info on many of the Lewis and Glassons which I can share with you. Im interested too in finding out about Margaretta's (Greta) family - the Dix and where Greta and her mother were born as I have a photo of them - someone in the family took lots of photos! Regards Briar PS. The correct spelling is Arundel - its seems that those American reletives changed their spelling!
