The "Titanic" disaster and St.Ives

I have "traced", with the help of a contact in Michigan,USA, several Cornish miners and their relatives who perished in 1912.
Joseph Charles Nicholls 1892 St.Ives-1912.
John Morgan Davies (a half brother,I think).
Maud and Agnes Davies.
William Carbines 1893 St.Ives-15 April 1912.
William John Berriman, Brother-in-law of W Carbines,b1887 ?St.Ives (but unsure of detail). His spouse may be Annie Richards Carbines but she may have remained at home.
Some bodies were repatriated to St.Ives. Joseph Nicholls has a grave in Michigan. My contact visits it from time to time.
Anyone like to comment upon/correct this?

Let us remember all those who died on the 'Titanic', the centenary of this disaster being celebrated today.

I can add to this topic with information about passengers on the 'Titanic' from Penzance - some who perished and others who survived.

Richard George Hocking, aged 23, who was a baker originally from Penzance and en route to Akron, Ohio where he was working at the Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company, perished alongside one of his friends and travelling companions Harry Cotterill (20), a carpenter from Penzance. They had boarded the ship at Southampton together with other members of the Hocking family. In this group were Richard George Hocking's mother, Mrs. Eliza Hocking, his sisters Nellie Hocking and Emily Richards nee Hocking and Emily's two young sons William Rowe Richards (3) and Sibley George Richards (10 months) - known as George. Emily's husband James Sibley Richards had already emigrated and was working in Akron and the family were going out there to join him with Richard George Hocking escorting his relatives. Mrs. Eliza Hocking, Nellie Hocking, Emily Richards and her two young sons all survived the tragedy. The family later returned to live in the Penzance area.

From when I was young and living in Penzance, I remember well Mrs. Emily Richards and her son George. George married my maternal grandmother's first cousin Lizzie James and they had one son called Tony. I remember visiting them at their home in St. James's Street, Penzance.

Very recently in our UK news there have been reports of letters now for sale (valued at about £20,000) which were written by survivor Mrs. Emily Richards to her mother-in-law following the disaster. In one letter Emily wrote that Captain Edward Smith of the Titanic had been drinking in the bar prior to the disaster and that he may have been drunk when the ship hit the iceberg.

Many people from the Penzance, Newlyn and the surrounding area emigrated at that time to work at the tyre company in Akron, Ohio.

At a recent coffee morning the St Ives Archive had a display on the St Ives victims of the "Titanic" disaster.
Worth contacting them for further information if you want it David.

The above is broadly correct, but the only body repatriated was that of William Carbines, who lies in Barnoon cemetery, St Ives, and Maude Sincock was Agnes' friend. More details can be found at 17.03 in a YouTube video called 'Slices of St Ives (2012 update)' or this
