slight complication: 8 July 1865 at St Columb (image 218 at FS) Mary Ann Payne spinster, father Glanville, married James Quintrell and in 1871 she and James are at St Columb with 5 yr old son John.
Have we got a death for John Cotton?
Also: William Payne Cotton m Eliza Edmonds Wallis Mar 1888 Penzance 5c, 361 BUT William H Cotton ( b St Columb has wife Ellen & children in 1891 census for St Teath)

in 1871 & 81 William Payne Cotton is with his mother Mary J Cotton b 1833 Newlyn ( and with father John also in 1871) so he is definitely not the same person as William H, grandson of Glanvill

Yes, there was another Payne family in the Penzance area that goes back beyond the arrival of Grandfield/Glanvill and they caused me a couple of headaches while I was trying to sort out the Stone family and their Payne connection.

and of course not only was James Stone William Payne's uncle but also his step-father-in-law!
James Stone m Mary Prowse Oct 1860 Penzance, 5c 570
which is why the household in 1861 is: James Stone 37 Mary Stone 37 Thomas Stone 14 Margaret Stone 9 Joanna Stone 5 Sarah J Prowse 18 Mary A Prowse 11 William Payne 18
Thomas, Margaret & Joanna being the children by James' first wife Joanna Murley (m 22 Apr 1843) Joanna buried 6 Jun 1860 age 39 at Buryan
Also William Henry Payne son of Mary bapt St Columb 5 May 1864, born 20 Jan 1858 - no father's name but presumably Mr Cotton as he used that name in all censuses except 1861.
William Henry C Payne m Ellen Kent Jul 1877 St Columb 5c, 141

According to the 1911 census John Warren Stone and Sarah Jane had 7 grandchildren. As Sarah Beatrice was their only living child (two sons died in infancy) we must assume that they are all hers: Elizabeth Mehetable b 1896 Florence Lilian b 1898 John F b abt 1900 Joseph Herbert b 1902 Bertha b 1906 Alberta b 1908 Thornley b 1910
according to a tree at Ancestry Alberta's father was Alber Mann.

According to FreeBMD the first child of Sarah Beatrice was:- Elizabeth Metheabell Stone born December Qtr 1895 Vol 5c Page 252 Seems a little strange that a couple of years later the second child, Florence Lilian, is baptised at St Buryan yet there is no baptism at St Buryan for Elizabeth. For that matter there is no baptism anywhere that I have been able to find.

Drat! - I reckoned I had missed something. It had crossed my mind to check the St Buryan NC records I have and then I completely forgot!

Thanks everyone for your input and information. I'm glad I checked back because I was not alerted to having any replies. The information about Sarah Jane's mother Mary is interesting as I have never been able to find her parents until now. So that fills another piece in the puzzle. Sarah Beatrice was my great grandmother and has always been a bit a of mystery to me. She had ten children and didn't appear to marry the father/fathers of any. The only children whom she recorded a father on the birth certificate was my grandmother Alberta, who's father was apparently Albert Mann...a married man in St. Buryan. Her two last children have the name Stephen Roberts listed as the father but she is not listed as married to him. Do you see the mystery?? All the other children's birth certificates carry the Stone name. A researcher in England told me he had never seen so many children born out of wedlock! In 1920 she sent three of them, my grandmother included, to the Barnardo home in London (?) and two were sent to Canada and one to Australia. Apparently she was sick and I think Sarah Jane died leaving the care of the children to John. After she recovered however, she had more children.

Londoner: In the 1911 Census the children are all Sarah Beatrice's and yes John and Sarah Jane had two boys that died, leaving Sarah Beatrice their only living child. They were blessed with a slew of grandchildren however!!

Canada1 - unfortunately I know of no way to set this site up to feed out alerts when threads are updated. But really - I think doing that would make us less dynamic and less fun. You just never know what you are going to find being discussed if you just get in the habit of logging in periodically to see what's happening! And if you were to only log in when alerted that a particular thread was updated then there is always the possibility you may have no reason to log in for quite some time. And in that time you might miss something that could lead you to other discoveries or the breakdown of another brick wall! CT
