My name is Erika...I'm from the states (specifically I live in New York City....grew up in the Rochester, NY area).
My connection to the Penwith area would come from my mother's side of the family. Her grandmother is Janie Eddy (who married Owen Burley when she moved here), daughter of John Eddy and Grace Woolcock. Last year I stumbled on someone else's lineage chart that took her family back to the 1700's. And then later, I found another that took it further back to the 1500's.
As a writer and a lover of history (and just generally in awe of this whole thing), I am extremely interested in finding out more about the stories of the Eddy family. Who were they as people? What kind of lives did they lead? As you can imagine, living over here so far from there can make it difficult to put all of that in perspective.
I look forward to meeting people and furthering my understanding!

Hello Erika and welcome
I have some Eddy's in my family tree, so let's hear what you have or what you're looking for and maybe we can throw some light on the EDDY's. Who were John and Grace's parents? I have an Elizabeth WOOLCOCK born Cornwall 1848. Any link???
I have these John EDDY names - born: John Eddy (No DOB - father Matthew EDDY born 1748) 1783 1787 1802 1842 1844 1816 1857

WELCOME Erika and glad to have you aboard. You have a very interesting (and awkward) family to deal with here. I, too, have Eddy connections and have done a bit of work on them over the years. Don't seem to have your John and Grace in my database at the moment - but that can be rectified. I presume you will have some information about them in one of your posts so I will start looking around. (New York - Eh!) - You might find a little bit of work coming your way. I have had family in and around NY since about the 1850's and have had a bit of trouble tracking down information on a few of them. You just might be able to help. ;D To avoid cluttering up the Board unnecessarily you may contact me via a Personal Message if you wish and we can work out what you might be able to do. Cornish Terrier (Ian)

Hello Erika, Where in Cornwall did your Eddys come from? If you are interested in what like was like in Penwith in the past, I can recommend the books published by the Penwith Local History Group. One is called "West Penwith in the time of Charles II" and relates to the 1660s. The other has a title something like "In and around Penzance in Napoleonic times" and relates of course to the early 1800s. They would give you some background detail for the kind of life your Eddy forebears probably led. You may have to obtain these directly from the UK. Bernard Deacon has also published a study entitled "the Cornish Family" which has a page or two therein devoted to the Eddys generally.

I will certainly look into them. My family is mostly from the Gulval area....in fact, very few branches moved much further away (unless it's really away like the States or Australia) until after 1900.
