Here is a tale that you might like to have a think about of you have nothing better to do with the start of 2012.... thankfully you are mostly not in Christchurch where you can go surfing without any water - earthquakes still abound with a magnitude 6.0 yesterday morning.... one of many.

So this quest started by looking at the marriage of another Thomas GLASSON in 1903 in the district of Redruth. The following appeared:

I looked for Thomas married to one of these two ladies in the 1911 census but I could not find them. So I gave up for a while.

Then while perusing the OPC database I found the following baptism:

12th August 1908 at Camborne, Naomi Sybil GLASSON, to Thomas and Phyllis, a mason of 5 William Street.

This child died very soon after by the way but that does not matter here.

Going back to the marriage from before, which is the only marriage that seemed to fit, I thought that now the most likely bride was Philippa Tonkin BARNETT - closest name to Phyllis that I could find anyway......

But then while looking at FreeBMD for BARNETT I found this:

Following on from the original search - is Philippa the Phyllis who is the mother of the child Naomi? and therefore the wife of Thomas???

And where is she in the 1911 census...

Well they were in Idaho, and in the 1910 US census Thomas and Phyllis were aged 26, Violet aged 9, Gwendlin aged 3 and Phyllis aged 2 - all born in England - and I will come to Violet later. So Thomas was a mason born around 1884, somewhere near Camborne most like.

To understand Violet you have to go back to the 1901 census of the UK and you find a 2 month old Violet living with her grandmother Mary BARNETT at Church Row in Gwennap, and in the house are also two adult daughters of Mary - Ellen aged 21 and Philippa aged 20 years. By the way, there is also a 9 month old grand daughter nmed Bessie so maybe these sisters had a bit in common - perhaps not.

You can then find:

Maybe 30 years of age in the 1910 census might have been a bit more honest.. maybe she didn't know.

Lannanta - the identical Registration Numbers are a fairly clear indication that Winifred Woods and Winifred Glasson are the same child and it is not unusual to find two records.

Do you have any possibilities for the identity of Thomas Glasson?

Do you have any possibilities for the identity of Thomas Glasson

At this stage, and given the discussion a few days ago on the Bryne family as well, three.... born around the 1884 era, in the 1901 census but not in 1911...

First
Thomas, born 1882 at Camborne, son of James & Catherine nee Gribble; a plasterer at Liskeard in the 1901 census.
Second
Thomas, born 1883 at Connor Downs Gwinear, orphan, son of Thomas & Elizabeth nee Jennings, a clark(?) apprentice at Connor Downs in the 1901 census.
Third
Thomas John, born 1883 at Rejerrah, son of John Francis & Mary Jane nee Hoskin, a horseman on a farm at Perranzabuloe in the 1901 census.

I am leaning towards number 2.

I actually missed the '1903' tucked up at the top of the first record!
But yes, I think it shows that adoption was most likely involved and that a second birth Certificate was issued in the adopted name. That second certificate should show that the child was about 1 year old.

Lannanta - I have had a look at my records for the marriage of Thomas Glasson and have also just checked availability of a couple on the OPC site.

But on reading your earlier note again I would suggest the marriage probably took place at Gwennap. Unfortunately the FamilySearch PRs for Gwennap Marriages only go to 1900 so I am not able to check.

The one other possibility of course is that it was a Registry Office Marriage but I am inclined to think that Gwennap is likely because you say that is where Mary Barnett was in 1901 with grandaughter Violet.
